SC - What's wrong ?

What's wrong with each of the sentences below: Please explain?????


(A) The hotels that has the best breakfast buffet are usually booked.

(B) The group of students who are from families that live near the school is always on time.

(C) The men who are singing outside of the neighborhood, which have recently been a high-crime area, need to be quiet.

(D) Remaining quiet during the concerts that is going on can be extremely difficult for young children.

(E) The constellation of stars that are my favorite constellation is called The Big Dipper.

S-V agreement. Plural hotels require "have".

families that live near school is an absurd comparison. Also "group of students who are..." is a bit awkward.
Possible correction:
The group - consisting of students who live near the school - is always on time.

S-V agreement. neighborhood is singular and thus requires "has".

A few problems here. First, its wordy "concerts that is going on" is redundant. Second, there are S-V agreement errors. Third, passive voice isn't really concise.(This is more a stylistic thing than a real error).

Possible corrections.
Remaining quiet during the concerts can be extremely difficult for children.
It can be extremely difficult for young children to remain quiet during the concerts.

(E) The constellation of stars that are my favorite constellation is called The Big Dipper.
Just as the previous one, it is wordy and has S-V errors. Constellation requires "is". "of stars" is redundant.

Possible correction.
The big dipper is my favorite constellation.

Yes but in 4, if you have to say concerts in going on, then you need to write concerts are going on, not is.

Hey Birottam:
I am not sure what you are alluding to here. If you mean that "concerts are going on" is correct instead of "concerts is going on", I thought that I covered it, when I said that there were S-V agreement errors. If that's what you were hinting, then its fine.

If you mean that "concerts are going on" is necessary to be in the sentence, I differ on that point. In my opinion, "during" already covers the meaning that suggests that the concerts are on-going.
So writing it again as "that are going on" is redundant.

Let me know if we are on the same page :)

Eric,

Answer choice B is written correct because the singular subject "the group" agrees with the singular verb "is." The plural verb "are" agrees with "students," which is the plural antecedent of the subject pronoun "who." The plural verb "live" agrees with the plural antecedent "families" of the subject pronoun "that."
