Aristotle SC Grail - Input

by hja379 » Sat Jan 08, 2011 6:00 am
I read the SC Grail yesterday and thought it was very good. I have started practicing the questions at the end.

Please let me know if they are true representative of the GMAT questions. I just have 3 weeks to go and I don't want to waste any time.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

@hja379

I agree with you . SC Grail is fantastic. The concepts are given in a very clear way in the book and as a result you can understand things faster and better.
I found the questions in the SC Questionbank to be quite representative of the GMAT questions. However, there are a few questions in the SC Questionbank which are quite difficult while most of the questions are of average difficulty level. Then also, I think the questions there are quite helpful as they help you build a strong foundation and you can see how the concepts are being applied. I actually used the Question-wise breakup matrix given at the end of the book and did the questions topic wise. This ensured that I master each topic properly. Are you doing the questions sequentially ?
Anyway, I don't think that it should take you more than 2 days to finish the questions there. Move to OG12 then.

By all means use the explanations if they make more sense, but I always recommend doing OG questions first. They are the most solid basis for GMAT preparation.

Can you please tell me how good is SC Grail ? I have MGMAT SC Guide but I am finding it a little confusing. I went through their tense tutorial and really liked it ,so I am contemplating buying the SC Grail.

I have completed both MGMAT SC Guide and Aristotle SC Grail. I cannot comment about the other as I have not used it.

If you are a non-native speaker begin with Aristotle SC Grail. I was not aware of it before and I started with
MGMAT SC Guide. You should be able to finish SC Grail in a few days or over a weekend. Then go over
the MGMAT for a more thorough understanding and a grasp of concepts. Then depending on your comfort level,
you can use one or the other for future reference as you practice OG.

My 2 cents.

@powerpuff - Buy it. It is worth the price. It will also give you additional 100 practice questions.

The same reason, I purchased it. I loved their tense tutorial and thought they explained things in a much simpler manner.

I think i have the old version of SC Grail.I dont see any practice questions there. Is the new version different from the old one with respect to the content too.
Are the questions included in the pdf or do the buyers have to access it from the site using authentication Details.
Thanks for the Help

I don't think there are any differences between old and the new version with respect to content, except the addition of practice questions. Once you buy the pdf, it does not require any authentication.

I would also recommend that you check e-gmat.com out. I finished it last year (26th December) and have since seen significant improvement in my accuracy (75%-85%). I am a lot more confident while answering the questions and look forward to getting new questions every day on the forum. While it is not a book, their audio visual mode of presentation is much more detailed and is designed for non-native speakers (even Germans like me). It also has quite a few questions (they claim 450) and they provide great expert support. I personally have found it very easy to understand. There are others who have praised it in the past for SC (just search the forum). At 30 euros, it is a bargain.

I am not a very fast reader and it usually takes me 1-2 weeks for properly read a 200 page book, however I was able to finish the e-gmat course in 2 weeks while devoting only 2 hrs per day. I probably answered close to 200 questions during this time. I still have quite a few more questions left (in exercises) that I intend to practice before the exam. Just for comparison, I also read the powerscore CR book during that time (an excellent resource for CR, highly recommended), however I probably had to spend 4-5 hrs every day to complete the book. An while this has helped me a lot in CR, I believe that I would need to re-read the some portions of the book again just to recall everything.

Dude, just chill! If you've MGMAT SC Guide and Aristotle SC Grail, I don't think you should require anything else. Focus on understanding the concepts well and keep practicing questions from the OG .I think you should be sufficiently prepared.

The course costs 30 Euros, or 39 US dollars. Again, I have found the course to be more useful than MGMAT SC or Aristotle SC (I have both). egmat for SC is like Powerscore for CR. For CR, I had read the MGMAT CR book and while I liked the book when I read it, it did not provide me the tools that I could use while answering the questions. Powerscore did that. I can say the same about MGMAT SC. its a Bible, it has a lot of good content but it does not teach me how to apply the concepts. Like others, I found it to be too grammar oriented. egmat has something called application files, in addition to the regular concept files, where they only teach how to apply the concepts.

I would recommend that you do egmat free trial. The offer 20% of their concepts for free. I did the free trial and after I did a few concepts like verb-ing modifier and sentence structure I knew that this course would work for me.
