sales records

by clock60 » Thu Dec 09, 2010 1:12 pm
hi guys i confused with this one, don`t know from what point to start, it is possible to explain in details!?

Ann $450,000
Bob $360,000
Cal $190,000
Dot $210,000
Ed $680,000

The table above shows the total sales recorded in July for the five salespeople. It was discovered that one of Cal's sales was incorrectly recorded as one of Ann's sales. After this error was corrected, Ann's total sales were still higher than Cal's total sales, and the median of 5 sales totals was $330,000. What was the value of the incorrectly recorded sale?

a) 30000
b) 48000
c) 90000
d) 120000
e) 140000
oa is D

Given data:

A - 450K
B - 360K
C - 190K
D - 210K
E - 680k

Given the median of 5 sales totals was $330,00. Plug in this value into the given data (ascending order)

C - 190K
D - 210K
Median - 330K
B - 360K
A - 450K
E - 680k

Now one among Cal or Ann sales record is 330K. Also the difference between the sales record of Cal/Ann and the median value is 140K and 120K respectively.

Also given - After this error was corrected, Ann's total sales were still higher than Cal's total sales. Hence only one of the difference sales record value will ensure that Ann's total sales > Cal's total sales record and that is 120K

Hence final arrangement should be (ascending order):

D - 210K
C - 310K
A - 330K
B - 360K
E - 680k

Answer is : D (120K).

If you find the question confusing and don't know where to start, look at the answer choices. We can plug them in for the incorrectly recorded sale:

Answer choice C: Cal gets 90,000, Ann loses 90,000
New Cal = 190,000 + 90,000 = 280,000
New Ann = 450,000 - 90,000 = 360,000
New list: 210,000; 280,000; 360,000; 360,000; 680,000.
Median = 360,000. Doesn't work.

Answer choice D: Cal gets 120,000, Ann loses 120,000
New Cal = 190,000 + 120,000 = 310,000
New Ann = 450,000 - 120,000 = 330,000
New list: 210,000; 310,000; 330,000; 360,000; 680,000.
Ann>Cal, Median = 330,000. Success!

The correct answer is D.

Whenever you don't know where to start, ask yourself whether you can plug in the answer choices -- a much better approach than just staring at the computer screen. (You also should consider reading How To Unstick Yourself, a BTG article I wrote about what to do when you don't know what to do.)
