Round 3 @ Mays Business School

by PursuitOfGlory » Thu Oct 31, 2013 10:42 pm
Hello,

I am planning on applying to Mays MBA and found that their deadlines are as follows:

Round 1 - September 16, 2013 (early decision)
Round 2 - November 1, 2013
Round 3 - January 15, 2014
Round 4 - March 1, 2014
Round 5 - April 15, 2014

I am an international candidate (from India).

Most schools have their round 2 deadlines in dec or Jan. I was surprised to notice that i missed the 2nd deadline for Mays already (I recently added Mays to my list).

Here's a brief overview of my profile:

Indian IT Male - 30 yrs

GMAT: 690 (Math 48, Verbal 37 IR 7)
Experience:
7.5yrs in IT company (6yrs in US)
Project/ Program Manager at a software company, managing a team of 55 associates.
Also have experience in Business consulting, enabling process optimizations and process outsourcing.

Do you think it is worth applying round 3? There seems to be a stigma around applying late in the game, especially when i come from one of the over represented groups.
Also the batch size for Mays is quite small. Should I take the risk or pick another college?

Your thoughts are appreciated. Please chime in!

Well, if you can apply R1 next year it's always good! But anyhow, it's not "R3" that is the hardest, but the LAST ROUND. Since Mays has more than three rounds, round three is STILL okay!!!

Hi Pursuit of Glory -

I can provide you with insight on this question. I was previously the Director of MBA Admissions at Texas A&M, and now I have my own business as an MBA admissions consultant (MBA Admissions Coach).

If you're going to apply to Mays, Round 3 (January 15) is fine. However, you should not apply later than Round 3. The admissions process is heaviest for Round 3, and international candidates applying after Round 3 have timing challenges regarding the admissions process versus the immigration process.

If I can help you further, please feel free to contact me.

Hey there,

I agree with what the others have said - don't go past January 15th but you should be fine for their "R3". For the others looking at this thread, if you find yourself looking at a school in a similar position, understand that when we as admissions consultants caution against R3 it's independent of early decision rounds. So in this case Mays counts 9/16 as R1 but, in all honesty, their 11/1 date is more realistically their R1.

Cheers,

Bhavik

Hi Wendy,
The Texas A&M Uni. website mentions that it prefers candidates with managerial experience. I have 3.5 years of SAP ERP implementation experience with quite a few achievements but it is not a managerial one. Considering an otherwise competitive profile, please advise if I should go ahead with my application in Round 3.

Deepa
