Horses

by shashank.ism » Mon Feb 15, 2010 10:37 pm
Five horses, Red, White, Grey, Black and Spotted participated in a race. As per the rules of the race, the persons betting on the winning horse get four times the bet amount and those betting on the horse that came in second get thrice the bet amount. Moreover, the bet amount is returned to those betting on the horse that came in third, and the rest lose the bet amount. Raju bets Rs. 3000, Rs. 2000 Rs. 1000 on Red, White and Black horses respectively and ends up with no profit and no loss.

Which of the following cannot be true?
A) At least two horses finished before Spotted
B) Red finished last
C) There were three horses between Black and Spotted
D) There were three horses between White and Red
E) Grey came in second

Let us first understand the constraint of the problem. Raju betted Rs. 3000, 2000, and 1000 and ended up with no profit or loss, that means he betted a total amount of 6000 and got back Rs. 6000.

Let us next observe how the money is returned.
Winning horse - 4 times the amount betted.
Second place- 3 times the amount betted
Third place- The bet amount is returned
So if Raju got back 6000 then let us see what are the possibilities

Position of horses______________ Amount betted______________ Amount received

1___________________________3000__________________________12000

1__________________________2000___________________________8000

1 ___________________________1000__________________________4000

2_________________________3000_____________________________9000

2________________________2000_______________________________6000

2________________________1000_______________________________3000

3_________________________3000________________________________3000

3________________________2000_______________________________2000

3________________________1000_________________________________1000

Since Raju received Rs. 6000 we need to observe from the above possibilities which combinations can give us Rs. 6000.

Possibilities 1, 2 and 4 are more than 6000, so those cannot be the solution. Combination 3, 8 and 6 and no other possibilities exists. Hence we get the following possibilities for Rank of horses.

Rank I II III IV V R=RED

Horse Black Grey/Spotted White R/G/S R/G/S G-Grey
amt. Recevied 4000 2000 0 0 S- spotted

Horse G/S White G/S R/G/S/B R/G/S/B
amt Received 6000
Horse G/S Black Red W/G/S W/G/S

amt received 3000 and 3000

Looking at the table above we find

(i) can be true
(ii) can be true as R can be the last horse in each of the 3 possibilities
(iii) Can be true
(iv) Cannot be true as in none of the options White is first and Redis last

Hence option (iv) is the answer

No its not. They are just cheaters posting anything and everything in order to cheat their way to a prize and then they have the audacity to get mad when someone calls them out on their cheating.

Well, the question surely falls out of the purview of GMAT though it is a very good problem for brainstorming.

Hey Shashank,
It would be better if you just write "Challenge Question" in the subject box. That way only people who are interested in solving them would go to the post.

I guess it would a good idea for other people of the community also to post such questions under the header:-"Challenge Question".
That way people who like math can have a go at it. :P
It takes time and effort to explain, so if my comment helped you please press Thanks button :)

Challenge???

What is the challenge you guys are having to copy some question from some source and post it over here, just to inflate post count???

I do not have a problem with the difficulty, but I do have a problem with false pretensions,

Well ajith ,
I would say the a lot of the practice problems have become very common and can be found in numerous sources. So, I guess ,as we are not question makers ,the questions have to be taken from somewhere.
Also, what is the harm in posting a question that has never been discussed in the forum and can help the community members to learn tricks and identify their mistakes.

Also,on numerous occasions I have seen that an answer is posted for a question by someone.
Then ,you also post a subsequent soln. which sometimes is same as the former solution sometimes not.
Now,wouldn't it be wrong to say that you are merely copying the answer and increasing your post count?
I surely hope that you actually solve those questions and sometimes they turn out to be the same.
[I have personally seen some of your methods and they seem excellent for problem solving as well for saving time-Well someone(I dont remember the name) did call u a math-whiz]

I guess you also have to see the other person's point of view.

All said and done,I would like to say that unless the question has already been discussed on the forum and it is a good practice problem,it is okay to post it in the forum(whatever be its source-Ofcourse i am not talking about the live GMAT questions over here) and help the community members to gain from it.I hope you also agree on this point. :)
