I would go with C

In this sentence the comparison is made between the blue-winged warbler and other warbler species.
"To distinguish" makes the main point of the sentence clear and concise.

Unlike most warbler species, the male and female blue-winged warbler are very difficult to tell apart.

In this question we need to compare most warbler species with male and female warbler species and NOT with male and female warbler. So A is incorrect.

A would be correct if we had something like,

Unlike most warbler species, the male and female blue-winged warbler species are very difficult to tell apart

Similarly B is incorrect for the same reason. C would be correct if we had,
Unlike those in most warbler species, those in male and female blue-winged warblers are very difficult to distinguish.

D is awkward and this leaves us with E. To be honest E doesn't seem the best answer but it is certainly the best among the 5 given choice.

(A) Unlike most warbler species, the male and female blue-winged warbler are very difficult to tell apart.
(B) Unlike most warbler species, the gender of the blue-winged warbler is very difficult to distinguish.
(C) Unlike those in most warbler species, the male and female blue-winged warblers are very difficult to distinguish.
(D) It is very difficult, unlike in most warbler species, to tell the male and female blue-winged warbler apart.
(E) Blue-winged warblers are unlike most species of warbler in that it is very difficult to tell the male and female apart .

IMO C

The original sentence erred because it did not properly set up the parallelism - species vs male & female blue-winged warbler thus choice A should be eliminated.

Choice B falsely sets up comparison between speices & gender. Eliminate.

Choice C - best choice

Choice D - awkward

Choice E - changes the meaning of the sentence.

Hi, sorry. I want to add to my earlier post regarding why C is correct.

C) Unlike those in most warbler species, the male and female blue-winged warblers are very difficult to distinguish.

IMO, the comparison between the male & female warbler (aka "those) in most warbler species vs the male & female blue-winged warblers has been clearly set up in choice C. Thus, I think C is the best choice.

Although, I wonder whether the sentence should also something like

Unlike those in most (other) warbler species, the male and female blue-winged warblers are very difficult to distinguish.

Since technically, blue-winged warbler belongs to the warbler species. It's similar to comparing roses to flowers... What do others think?

Only Option C has correct comparison between X and Y , also X and Y are parallel

IMO C

Definitely E . Blue winged warblers are compared with other species of warblers. Just E makes sense

IMO E

a] Incorrect comparison: Most warbler species compared with male and female blue winged warbler

b] Incorrect comparison: Most warbler species compared with gender

c] Incorrect comparison: It would be correct if it read: Unlike those "in" most warbler species, the male and female "in" blue winged warblers

d] Awkward structure

e] Perfect.
1. Blue winged warblers, which are a kind of species of warblers, are compared with other species of warbler.
2. Correct use of "in that". "in that' is used to qualify the previous statement. Blue winged warblers are different from most species in NOT EVERY WAY. There is one way they are different and that one way is that it is difficult to distinguish between male and female. So "in that' is perfect here because it acts as a qualifier for the previous statement.
Dumb,
E is comparing Blue winged warblers with Most species, 100% imperfect
