A collection of books

by islands80 » Thu Apr 26, 2012 1:09 am
A collection of books went on sale, and 2/3 of them were sold for $2.50 each. If none of the 36 remaining books were sold, what was the total amount received for the books that were sold?

(A) $180
(B) $135
(C) $90
(D) $60
(E) $54

OA to follow....

I 'll go with A $180.

question states 2/3 were sold, i.e 1/3 of books still remain.
these 1/3 books = 36 in number
therefore total books = 36 * 3 = 108.

2/3 of 108 i.e. = 72 were sold at $2.50 each.

hence, total ocst = 2.5 * 72 = 180
Its do or die this time!

Number of books sold = 2 parts out of 3
Number of remaining books = 1 part of 3 = 36.
If one part contains 36 books, then 2 parts contain ? = 2*36 = 72 books

Cost of each book = $ 5/2
Cost of 72 books = $ 72*5/2 = 36*5 = $180
