How best should we deal with reapplication essays? Especially when it comes to questions like Stanford's what matters to you most and why?

As in, should we elaborate on the topic from before or choose something else that matters to us most (which is a bit strange).

And also the same goes for questions such as: what are your most substantial accomplishments? While I can think of a few new accomplishments since I last applied, not sure if it is a good idea to repeat 1 or 2 stories if they were indeed substantial/significant.

Thanks.

achan4,

Thanks for your questions about how a re applicant should approach the essays.

As a re applicant, you want to convey to the adcom how you have improved as an applicant. Perhaps you were promoted at work, achieved some milestone at work or outside of work, got a higher gmat score, got an A in a class, clarified your career goals, etc.

Once you figure out what your new and improved message is, you then want to convey this somewhere in your essays. Typically this is done in the career goals essay. "Since I last applied, I have accomplished A, B and C...."

Assuming that you have covered this in the career goals essay, then you don't need to explicitly cover this in the other essays.

You also asked if you need to come up with new essay topics. It really comes back to your re applicant strategy. If your essays were strong last year, and the main issue was a low GMAT (and you addressed it with a high GMAT), then you might consider reusing some of the essays. Having said this, if your experiences from the last year lend themselves to a better essay this year, then you should rewrite your essays.

Essentially, each re applicant has an individual decision to make. I would be happy to schedule a free initial phone consultation with you to determine your best re applicant strategy. [email protected]

Sincerely,

Eliot Ingram
