I have highlighted some text from your query , addressing the first one , it took you long time . Here the problem is you are trying to jot down too much such as details , examples , names etc .Do NOT fret on details , just read and skip , but remember where what particular detail lies , i mean in which para , if asked you must be able to locate it in short span of time .While making map write down the infrence , main point , purpose , those things which are not explicitly cited in passage will be more helpful . If it doesnt work for you take very short abrevated notes to just give you a direction . Its just like going through lanes in new city and remebering the path by landmarks , so u dnt need to remember every turn but just landmark and the big picture of the city .I hope i dint confuse you with the analogy.

Secondly , you are worrying on what to remember and what not ? While taking notes if u feel that the piece of info is imp then just jot it down in least words , you will not forget the detail . Again an analogy , its like you have only 100 character limit to jot down notes so make use of the characters efficiently.Its like you are making use of memory in active way by taking notes. You will hardly refer back to notes , so its a tool to tune your mind in GMAT format .

Its just my opinion from my personal experiences .

What experts [Ron / Vivian ] suggest is to aks question like :-

Main idea of para ?
Purpose of para ?
Inference ?
Why is the para written ?

I like approaches and startegies , but after all need to develop personalised WAY to attack RC which suits you the best . I follow a hybrid approach , read all , jot imp points , i cant skim , refer back to passage for intricate details if required .

thanks Aim. what is exactly the difference between main idea and purpose? another thing that troubles me the most is Authors Tone etc.

you are correct in saying that i spend more time on details. but the problem is if i start skipping them then i dont get a hold of what the author is saying. If i don't read the complete passage (as some books suggest) then i feel absolutely lost and i end up reading the entire passage almost 4 times while answering 4 questions. This is what my biggest problem is and i end up spending almost 3 to 3.5 mints per question on RC. the result is that i am not able to answer all the questions.
