We are given that the ratio of physics majors to non-physics majors is 3 to 5. Thus:

physics : non-physics = 3x : 5x

Two physics majors leave the major and that results in a new ratio of 1 to 2. Thus:

(3x - 2)/(5x + 2) = 1/2

2(3x - 2) = 5x + 2

6x - 4 = 5x + 2

x = 6

Thus, there are 3 x 6 = 18 physics majors.
