In 1990 the budgets for projects Q & V were $660,000 and $ 780,000, respectively. In each of the next 10 years , the budget for Q increased by $ 30,000 and the budget for V decreased by $ 10,000. In which was the budget for Q equal to the budget for V ?

A 1992

B 1993

C 1994

D 1995

E 1996

In 1990 the budgets for projects Q and V were $660,000 and $780,000, respectively. In each of the next 10 years, the budget for Q was increased by $30,000 and the budget for V was decreased by $10,000. In which year was the budget for Q equal to the budget for V ?

(A) 1992
(B) 1993
(C) 1994
(D) 1995
(E) 1996
1990: Q = 660,000, V = 780,000

Each year, Q increases by 30,000, while V decreases by 10,000.
1991: Q = 690,000, V = 770,000
1992: Q = 720,000, V = 760,000
1993: Q = 750,000, V = 750,000.
The values are equal in 1993.

The correct answer is B.

Frame and equation -

660,000 + 30,000 t = 780,000 - 10,000t

40,000t = 120,000

t = 3

hence the budget will be equall exactly after three years , so 1990 + 3 yrs = 1993

We can treat this is a rate question.

In 1990 the GAP BETWEEN V's budget and Q's budget was $120,000 ($780,000 - $660,000 = $120,000)

Each year, the budget for Q increased by $30,000 and the budget for V decreased by $10,000. In other words, the GAP BETWEEN the budgets DECREASES by $40,000 each year

So, at a rate of $40,000 per year, it will take 3 years for the gap to decrease from $120,000 to $0

So, the gap will equal $0 (and the two budgets will be the same) in 1993
