Rain in inches

by shafeek » Wed Dec 17, 2008 1:36 pm
From 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM it rained 2.25 inches. At 11:00 AM the rain increased to fall at a rate of 1.25 in. every two hours. How many inches of rain landed on the ground by 5:00 PM?

7
9.75
6
3.25
7.125

OA after some discussion.

Hmm... am I missing something? This question doesn't seem very difficult!

There are 6 hours between 11 am and 5 pm, so that's 3.75 inches, plus the 2.25 inches that fell between 7 am and 11 am.

So, the answer is 6. Right?

Answer should be 6.

11AM - 5PM = 6 hrs

rain increased 1.25 every 2 hrs

6/2 = 3. 3*1.25 = 3.75

total rain = 2.25 + 3.75 = 6

OA?

Was about to add some more text when i posted it by mistake.

I had a doubt on whether it was increasing 1.25 times the previous amount every two hours or just 1.25 times every 2 hours

if question is saying increased then from 2.25 it cannot go 1.25 so it has to be 1.25 per two hours.

Well you are right about the language, and this shows that this problem is not from an official GMAT. So I wouldnt worry about it.

Hope this helps.
