Radio stations - Tough one

by GmatKiss » Fri Mar 09, 2012 8:50 am
Radio stations with radio data system (RDS) technology broadcast special program information that only radios with an RDS feature can receive. Between 1994 and 1996, the number of RDS radio stations in Verdland increased from 250 to 600. However, since the number of RDS-equipped radios in Verdland was about the same in 1996 as in 1994, the number of Verlanders receiving the special program information probably did not increase significantly.

Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

a. Few if any of the RDS radio stations that began broadcasting in Verdland after 1994 broadcast to people with RDS-equipped radios living in areas not previously reached by RDS stations.
b. In 1996 most Verdlanders who lived within the listening area of an RDS station already had a radio equipped to receive RDS.
c. Equipping a radio station with RDS technology does not decrease the station's listening area.
d. In 1996 Verlanders who did not own radios equipped to receive RDS could not receive any programming from the RDS radio stations that began broadcasting in Verdland after 1994.
e. The RDS radio stations in Verdland in 1996 did not all offer the same type of programming.

IMO: B

Well according to me the OA is D. It has to be D. The conclusion is in short that the listeners of the city did not increase after 1994.
To hold this conclusion it has to be assumed that the listeners did not receive any signals from the stations that is why that could claim that the listeners did not receive.

try negating the option D and you will find that the conclusion does not hold when you negate...

What is the OA???

a. Few if any of the RDS radio stations that began broadcasting in Verdland after 1994 broadcast to people with RDS-equipped radios living in areas not previously reached by RDS stations.
The language is a bit convoluted here. It says few RDS radio stations broadcast to people with RDS-equipped in 1996. Also note the adjective 'significantly' in the conclusion of the argument; it is in sync with 'few' here.
b. In 1996 most Verdlanders who lived within the listening area of an RDS station already had a radio equipped to receive RDS.
This weakens the argument because if most verdlanders already had radio equipment then they would receive more programs thereby contradicting the conclusion.

c. Equipping a radio station with RDS technology does not decrease the station's listening area.
This agains weakens the conclusion by ruling out the possibility that equipping a radio station with RDS might decrease station's listening area
d. In 1996 Verlanders who did not own radios equipped to receive RDS could not receive any programming from the RDS radio stations that began broadcasting in Verdland after 1994.
This restates the premise in the argument that verlanders without special radio equipments can not receive any program.

e. The RDS radio stations in Verdland in 1996 did not all offer the same type of programming.
Irrelevant as the 'type of programs' are not of the concern. It is the no. of receivers which is the scope of the argument.

So the answer here is A.
