So with this question it's easy to eliminate A & B since the modifier is incorrect. Having lived-->Paul Gaugin. The second thing to assess is the modifier for Tahiti, which needs to be Tahiti-->where. That means we can eliminate C.

E has a meaning issue. He didn't have difficulty readjusting because of the hectic pace, he had difficulty adjusting TO the hectic place. His difficulty was because of the difference between Tahiti and Paris.

Therefore, D.

we use having + past participle
1.to show a completed action that happened prior to the main or primary action and provide a context for the primary action.
2. to modify the doer of the primary action.

here,

here living was done before.so having lived shows a prior completed action.

having lived ... serves as a modifier for "paul gauguin"

having lived.... provides a context for the primary action "had difficulty readjusting....."

now looking at the options-

Having lived in Tahiti for several years, where life was slow and relaxed, it was difficult for Paul Gauguin to readjust to the hectic pace of Paris upon returning.(where life was slow... modifies several yearseliminate it

I feel that it's not clear whether the prepositional phrase "because of..." is modifying "RETURNING" or "READJUSTING". I eliminated this option based on this reasoning, but in nobody's reply I found such a reasoning.

Just want to validate whether we all are thinking alike i.e., whether such a reasoning is correct.
