Question on Pronoun Agreement

by mahinislam » Thu Feb 13, 2014 12:17 pm
Good afternoon everyone,

The following is from a Manhattan GMAT CAT that I took a couple of weeks ago. The correct answer for the question is "Agatha Christie's travels with her archaeologist husband served as inspiration for several of her mystery novels".

I thought this sentence would be grammatically incorrect because the pronoun 'her' doesn't refer back to Agatha Christie but instead refers to 'travels'.

Can someone please clarify? Thank you.

Her can be used both as possesive pronoun and as object pronoun. In the sentence that you have mentioned... "Her (possesive pronoun) is going back to the possesive noun (Agatha Christie's travels)

Adding on Anjali's comments:

The possible pronouns when the usage is:

Agatha Christie ----> she or her

but when

Agatha Christie's ----> her
