q- 50 v- 41 750 – My Journey

by deepak1485 » Thu Jul 08, 2010 6:18 am
I took my GMAT on 29th june scored 750 (98%ile). I feel obligated to post my experience here since I have gained so much from this forum

My journey: My GMAT journey officially started march 12th when I took my first Princeton cat scored 620 (Q40 V 36), knew this was less but was happy because this was the highest score in our class!! . The course continued took another Princeton cat on 18th April score improved scored 660 (Q 48 V 34). since I was scoring high in Princeton I decided to take a MGMAT test as I heard it was much harder. I Scored 660 (Q44 V 36) But what followed it were a string of similar scores over a period of two months till June. This was the time I really started to worry about GMAT. No matter what I do the scores never improved It seemed although 670 was the maximum I could get. This is when I turned to BTG for advice and came across this wonderful article (https://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/2010/03 ... o-for-you) which put things in right perspective. This is when I realized fretting over diag scores will not help me. Instead I decided to follow Stacey's advice in this article(https://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/2010/04 ... r-errors) , which told me how to analyze my errors soon I was busy preparing error logs and categorizing my mistakes. Sure enough my score did improve and I started hitting 700 in my MGMAT cats. Two weeks before the test I decided to build up my confidence and started doing only official material OG12 and verbal and quant reviews.

Test day: Had a good night's sleep woke up at around 7am revised MGMAT SC ,Sahil's notes and powerscore CR bible. Finished practice questions in the prep soft ware basically just wanted to get used to the background. I reached the test center a good one hour before the scheduled time. I had not prepared for AWA seriously finished argument with 30 seconds to spare but got caught up with the issue .I clicked next and before I could confirm I got a message saying time is up don't know if the essay got recorded or not .. Real nervous right now ... would hate to retake GMAT only for AWA.
After AWA took a the break for 4 mins. Quant section started well .I got a couple of questions which were strikingly similar to those in OG that said I did get about two -three questions which were frankly I did not understand guessed them and kept moving on .. then took another 4 min break splashed some cold water on my face stretched a bit and went ahead with the verbal section here some of the questions had the same format as that of prep test. It also had some SCs where I went blank nevertheless guess around three questions and finished verbal section with around 6 mins to spare.I finished the mandatory questions and was happy to see my score on the screen.

My review of the materials used:
I Concentrated more on verbal as I was quite good in quant (I come from an engineering background) .I used only the OG and Princeton review material for my quant preparation .

1.Princeton review class room course: This was a good course .In that it helped me focus on GMAT and gave a proper structure. The content of the course I felt focused a bit more on traps and tricks rather than on concepts, however the good thing about the course was it did give me a lot of questions to play around and use different strategies and figure out which works best.

2.MGMAT SC guide: All I can say is it lives up to praise heaped on it by everybody. I used a older (3rd edition) guide but the guide was helpful in raising my verbal score .

3.Power score CR bible: This again is a very good book I got it from a friend (older version again) but I was really impressed by the explanations of each question provided in the book .

4.MGMAT RC guide : though not in the same league as SC guide ,the RC guide is quite good .I basically bought it to get access to MGMAT tests.

5.OG 12:
6.OG verbal and quant review :
while OG12 is a must have verbal and quant reviews were basically extra practice . I used them because I had finished OG very early in my prep and every question seemed a repeat .
7.Sahil's notes: you need this if you want a high score in verbal.[/url]

Great debrief, thanks! Congratulations on the excellent score!

FYI the fact that you ran out of time on your Issue essay and thus did not click "Next" or "Confirm" is totally fine! Whatever you had written by then will definitely be recorded and scored :)

Congratulation! I was kind of wondering how effective the previous edition of MGMAT SC is, and you answered that question =).
