Psychoanalyst Anna Freud's groundbreaking work with English children in the mid-1930s suggests that the greater the strength of children's egos, their ability is better to deal effectively with tension and conflict.

A. their ability is better to deal effectively with tension and conflict
B. their ability is the better to deal effectively with tension and conflict
C. the better their ability to deal effectively with tension and conflict
D. in dealing with tension and conflict, their ability is better
E. in dealing with tension and conflict, the greater ability is theirs

OA: C

PrincetonReview's explanation: "
Yes. The issue here is D. parallelism. To be parallel with "the greater the strength . . .," the underlined portion must start with "the better . . . " Choice C is the only one that does this, so the answer is C.
"

Does anyone else agree that "their" in "their ability" is unclear without a precise antecedent?

I think here the use of THEIR is CORRECT...as their can refer to children's (Possessive) in other words just like HER, THEIR can also refer to possessive nouns

Their CAR...Their House

Look at THEIR HOUSE...here their is acting as possessive pronoun

This is HER BICYCLE..here HER is acting as possessive pronoun

Thank you. But, "their" is so close to "children's egos" one can logically infer that "their" connects to the egos, inferring that the egos have the ability to deal effectively with tension and conflict.

But, if the sentence makes grammatical sense, then that's fine. I want to make sure that I am not erroneously spotting grammatical errors that aren't there.

Thank you,

Gio

yes you are correct. I found the same problem on deeper analysis. However i have seen such a problem on a lot of questions.
