Kaplan 800 wacky subjunctive

State legislators fear that traffic accidents would be more frequent and severe if the speed limit was increased to 75 mph on rural highways.

B. would be more frequent and severe were the speed limit to be increased up
C. would be more frequent and severe were the speed limit increased
D. wouldbecome more frequent and severe with the speed limit increased
E. would become more frequent and severe after the speed limit has increased

IMO C
subjunctive: hypothetical situation, were should be used instead of was

A. uses was incorrectly.

B. uses were but too wordy. limit of ....to be increased upto..makes it reduandant by the use of limit and upto

C: uses were, does not have the wordiness of B. correct.

D: use of 'with' along with severe accidents alters the cause and effect relationship

E: has increased takes for granted that the speed limit has increased, but it is a hypothetical situation here

Try not to refer to the "question type" in your subject.

The "wacky subjunctive" was a dead give away :)
