by dhruvmangal » Sat Mar 26, 2011 10:41 pm
Dear All,

I want help to evaluate my profile for top 20 B-schools in the US.

Name: Dhruv Mangal
Nationality: Indian
10th Grade Marks: 91.0%
12th Grade Marke: 93.2%
Undergraduate CGPA: 7.54/10 (Computer Science Engineering, BITS Pilani Goa Campus)
Work Ex.: 2 years as Venue Technology Manager at Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010
GMAT:760(First Attempt)

I have been working at the Organizing Committee, Commonwealth Games Delhi since January 2009. Six months of it was a paid internship (part of my college curricular). Can this internship period be added to my work ex?

As a Venue Technology Manager in the Commonwealth Games I was handling technology infrastructure of one of the biggest stadium , used for the Opening and Closing ceremony and athletics during the games. I was also incharge of technology operations followed at the venue during the games. I got to work with international consultants from all over the world and got to be a part of the biggest international games after the Olympics.

I have been actively involved with community service all though college. I headed the ocal chapter of an NGO during college. I was actively involved in starting some employment generation plans for women and primary education project in an industrial slum. Even today I actively participate in activities of the NGO, although due to time constraints havent been as active as before.

I want to pursue MBA in Operations Management.

Please help me in accessing my profile for the top 20 b schools in the US and also furthur points that will help strengthen my profle since I have atleast a 6 months or more before I apply anywhere.

Thanks
Dhruv

Hello, Dhruv,

I would say from the information you've provided that you're well on your way to being a competitive applicant at top-20 US schools. To improve your chances I suggest the following:

- Keep volunteering and try to take leadership roles in these activities.
- Develop a strong track record of leadership and impact at work.
- As you develop professionally and outside of work, reflect and draw insights from your experiences, and clarify how you've grown - these points will be what you contribute to the program, rather than the fact of doing this or that.
- Develop compelling goals and articulate a rationale for them - why you are choosing this path.

These points will help you stand out and distinguish yourself among other qualified applicants.

Best regards,

Thanks a lot Cindy, I shall keep all these points in mind.
Just need one more advice. I am not sure if I should apply to a B school this year or should I wait for one more year before I apply to get atleast 3 years of work experience. What are the chances of getting into a good B school with only 2 years of work experience ( deducting the 6 months internship period)
Also since the GMAT format is going to change next year, is it possible that B schools next year will ask for GMAT score based on the new format or will they still accept scores from this year?

Hi, Dhruv,

You could apply this year to programs that are open to younger applicants. Worst case, your're not admitted -- and you reapply. For most programs being a reapplicant is not a negative factor (and for some programs it's even a positive factor if handled well), so it's not like you are closing doors by applying now.

I can't speculate about how the schools will handle the new GMAT. I would be surprised if they didn't accept scores from previous years, but I could be wrong.
