Indian / Male

GMAT: 680 (last year), 690, 700 (Q48, V38) overall 90th percentile with 83 in both quant and verbal

Undergrad: 3.9/4, engineering from a top indian school

Grad: MS, 4.0 from a top 3 US school

Experience: 4+ years. 3 years in a top 3 consulting firm in US, followed by 1+ year in a corporate strategy position in Industry. Strong leadership experience -- impact at CXO / VP level at both consulting and industry.

LORs: very strong

Extracurricular / Community: nothing spectacular but active participation in undergrad and grad. Currently teaching ESL to immigrants

Do I stand a chance at a top 5 school?

While I understand my GMAT is a weak point on my application, I don't want to give up on my dream because of that. I would've taken GMAT a few more time, if need be, to get a score around 740 but everyone says more than 3 times is not recommended.

I feel so powerless that my GMAT score could result in a failure to get in to a top school.

My plan is to apply to 6 schools in top 10 this year. If I don't get in then I'd continue to build my profile with additional community work and stronger leadership experience... and apply again next year. Maybe I'll take GMAT one more time next year and try to cross 720 barrier.

I am also wondering if an investment in an admission consultant would make a difference enough to get me in to a top 5 school. Does Stacy Blackman offer any webinars on the services offered?

Stacy / Lisa -- what are your thoughts?

I can't speak for the people who run this site, but personally, I think your GMAT score will be a non-issue for most top schools. I personally scored a 690 and just recently was admitted to Chicago Booth (I actually start this Thursday). Focus on your recommendations and essays and you will have a very solid shot at getting into your target schools. Don't be so hard on yourself either, a 700 is a solid GMAT score.

Mjyovkovich,

Thanks very much for your encouraging words and good luck for your opening week.

I would have been OK with 700 if I were not an Indian Male. From what I understand, AdCom compares your GMAT score to the pool you belong to. E.g. Indian / Male / Consultants.

That group, unfortunately, has pretty high GMAT average and that's why I am worried. I would be happily proven wrong.

Thanks!

Dear mba27,

From what you posted, I do think you have a shot at a top 10 school with a 700 GMAT. Your essays, recommendations, resume and interview will be key to the ultimate decision though. You need to distinguish yourself from similar applicants and make a strong case for your admission. This is where a consultant might make a difference for you. I encourage you to visit our website at www.stacyblackman.com and request a free consultation. You will also find information on our services and cost structure.

Good luck,
Lisa
