in re to letters of reccomendation and emba acceptance, does it matter if one works for a family business in the eyes of adcom? Is it better if ones supervisor is not actually family?

Dear Engin:

Recommendations from family members are generally not a good idea as the admissions committee will not consider them. You need to get professional references from non-family members. If you are related to all of your former supervisors, then you need to ask a vendor, client, or co-worker who can speak to your skills in a professional environment. You will also want to explain in your application why you do not have a recommendation from a former supervisor.

previous supervisors

My previous supervisors do not give out information because it is corporate policy. ALso I do not think that my previous manager is even at that company anymore. The company I work for is family based, athough professional and strictly business during working hours, I do not know what to do?

Dear Engin:

You must find at least one, if not two, recommenders from your professional experience. There must be a co-worker, client, vendor, etc. you could ask. To clarify, you can ask people in your current family-owned company as long as they are not related to you.
