Profile Evaluation Requested -> 770 GMAT

by abhi84v » Fri Sep 17, 2010 6:51 pm
Hello Everyone,

My profile reads thus:

Indian Male
26 Years Old
GPA 3.3/4.0 (from the top tech school in the country) -> graduated in 2007
GMAT 770
Work Ex - 3 Years (started in 2007 August)

I was one of four graduates selected for a three year graduate development program with Rio Tinto Mining Group in Australia. I have been here since working as an Electrical Engineer at one of the coal mines in Australia.

I also did a 3 month internship during university at the Univ of Carleton, Canada during my undergraduate years

With extra-curriculars have been involved with Literary events mostly. With social work did a bit during uni again but a little with aboriginal communities over here (nothing significant).

I am aiming for the top tier schools - London Business School, MIT Sloan, Stan, Wharton, Kellogg.

Could someone rate my chances? Will my lack of a very high GPA keep me away from these schools?
Never give up on the beast my friend, never give up!

Hi dude,

I may not be an expert in this field, but I want to offer you some advice without offending you.

You got a great score - 770, Congrats for that :)

Your profile is very good (very similar to mine), but I'll tell you 1 reason why I didn't select the top-tier univs - your gpa could have been compensated by more work experience.

I've seen that most apps are strong in at least 2 of these 3 areas - GMAT score, acad performance or work experience.

So, your chances could have been bolstered by a gpa of around 3.9 or 4. Combined with the GMAT score, it would make a great app, but the less work experience may become a hindrance (there are many people with 8-12 years of experience also applying).

Anyhow, I've not said that your chances are not there. There is ALWAYS A CHANCE and NO ONE CAN BE CERTAIN OF AN ADMIT.

Good luck with your apps ~

Are you trying for Chicago Booth ?

A slightly different perspective:

- Mining isn't an industry that sends in too many applicants into b-school. So in your classroom disussions, you'd be bringing in fresh perspectives.

- Your GPA needs to be viewed in the context that this grade is from a top tech school. I'd favour a top univ grad with a slightly lower GPA over a mediocre univ grad with a high grade.

- With your interest in creative pursuits and your GMAT score, you can position yourself as a 'balanced' candidate. You haven't talked about your post-MBA career options. Consulting might be interested in talking to you if that's an area of interest.

If you are keen on applying to the top schools, do so, but I'd recommend having a few safe options as well. Just in case.

Good luck, buddy.
