Today, I took my GMAT and bit disappointed with the result. I was hoping to get 700 as I studied hard in the last 8 weeks. Little bit pressurized in verbal section. Though, I was getting good number of corrects in OG12 and Verbal Supplement 2nd ed, when worked under no time pressure.

Final score 650 (Q49, V30) - waiting for AWA score (hoping to get above 4.0).

My description is very narrative so that someone can give me honest opinion.
Please go through my profile and advise me, whether I have a good chance with GMAT score of 650 or should I re-take GMAT to touch 700 or 720?

My profile

I am 39 year (Male ) working in USA for the last 11 years. I am from India.
I am highly motivated to pursue fulltime MBA in one of the top 5 business schools (Harvard, Wharton, Stanford, Kellogs and Booth) .

Bachelors Degree
Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering from regular University (in India)

Bachelors grades

74% ( may be equivalent to 3.2 to 3.5%) - It is called First Class with distinction.

Masters Degree Masters in Foundry and Forge Manufacturing Technology
(equivalent to MS)
Masters grades 8.6/10.0 CGPA (may be equivalent to 3.5) this includes 6 months project work at industrial site.

Elementary & High school Rudimentary rural schools with a little focus for higher education. But, provided tremendous joy, I love remembering what I learnt. But, I did hard work to become what I am today.

Work experience

WE1 3 years in reputed Engineering company ,in India , as a Technology Engineer ( Role Manufacturing process planning related Turbine parts manufacturing and assembling).
After the initial experience, I made a career change into by acquiring ERP and computer skills.

WE2 1 year in India as ERP Consultant implementing Manufacturing modules for Engineering manufacturers (Implementation Role Training of ERP modules, Process mapping, GAP analysis and filling etc.). In this role, I was utilized for ERP pre-sales activities. Serviced 5 ERP customers at various stages of implementation.

WE3 18 months in Dubai(UAE) as Sr. ERP Technical consultant (Designing and developing solutions for ERP customers and managing 1st line support) . This job involved some travel to Saudi Arabia. I serviced around 7 customers.
During this job, I acquired proficiency on Java programming skills

After this experience I made a career change into Java and other Microsoft technologies

WE4 18 months in USA as Technical Analyst/lead. I used to lead a team of 6
developers for Web application development. This role involved a blend of duties
such as Business Analysis, Tech spec development, offshore co-ordination,
Testing etc. Active member to initiate development of Pocket PC based products for products for the company.

Due to .Com bust I went back to ERP career for a stable job.

WE5 9 years in USA as Sr. ERP consultant for food manufacturer(Role
Implementation , support and enabling data exchange systems for new
customers and suppliers ).

As I gained my experience as subject matter expert, my compensation increased to low six figures. Right now, only career shift towards top management provides me satisfaction.

Entrepreneurship ( apart from fulltime job - 4 years )
1. Co-Founder of a ERP services company (4 years old) predominantly IT Staffing. This company doubled its staffing revenues every year since 2007. Somewhat successful so far and experiencing usual slow down. Total 30 people work for this company (this number fluctuates) due to starting and ending of new projects.

2. Co-Founder of a product development company in 2010 ( 1 year old) . We bagged 3 software projects. In one product, we developed software for a startup and we became investor in that startup too. We also acquired majority of stake in India based small software company , which is 13 year old and have several references.

In my entrepreneurship role, I worked as a technical recruiter, director, mentor, investor, software developer, dealmaker, HR executive, marketer etc. Working more than 30-40 hours a week apart from fulltime engagement, I gained tremendous confidence in the last 4 years. Every hour of the day utilized to balance between the tasks at hand.

Entrepreneurship taught me several lessons through repeated failures and gave me courage to pursue.

Social work
Somewhat Involved Works (no documented proofs)

1.In Bachelors, I co-founded a small school for the children of quarry workers.

We built a small hut and appointed unemployed youth as a teacher with a monthly salary of $30. Surprisingly, we could not afford to run the school as we could not collect the monthly donations and keep the motivation of children. The school was finally closed in 18 months.

2.Collected 100 Kilograms of cloths, blankets etc. from friends and families in Dubai and shipped to India earthquake victims.
3.Several small 1 day or 2 day events
4.Collected funds for Hospital maintenance in my hometown.

Just a financial contribution(proof)
5. Currently my company supports 6 orphan children ( take care food, cloths, shelter and education) in India for last 2 years. No direct involvement other than money contribution from my company. Did small work in the beginning of evaluation of the care and children. Receiving a periodic progress.

With the motivation I got from entrepreneurship and years of experience, I want to see myself in a leading role in bigger organization. Top B-School MBA can give me that knowledge, boost, credential to claim my candidature.

Thank you for looking into my profile.
Please advise me.

Hi,

The schools that you mention are going to be difficult with your profile. You have extensive experience & justifying why MBA would be complex. Most of the B-schools would feel your profile more suited to an Executive MBA, which is not a bad option considering that you would want to network with people who are at least equal to your rank.

One school I would advise you to explore is IMD.

Good Luck!

Thank you for responding. So far, I have not give a serious thought on executive program.
Is this score sufficient for an executive MBA?

What are the good executive programs in USA? Do they have equal career opportunities?

Almost all top schools in US have Executive MBA programs. And they do place a much lower emphasis on GMAT than what the standard MBA programs do. See, with your depth of experience you want a program which (rightly) values what you have more than a standardized test.

Since you are in the USA, you have a golden opportunity to visit as many programs as possible and interact with the participants. This will not only give you a better insight but will also help you in your application.

On a side note, I know someone with a similar profile as yours who went to the Kellogg 1 year MBA program - he had good reviews.

Career Opportunities: As you know, networking will open doors, and top schools will give you ample opportunities for that.

Good Luck!

You would have access to career services, though most likely in a format different from full time MBA (like perhaps no on-campus recruiting etc). You would find most info on the school website or by attending the events.

I will ask the person if he is willing to share his details, drop me a mail from my site's contact form and if he agrees I will connect you two.

Kellogg's one year program is intended for applicants with business educations (usually through an undergraduate business major). They expect applicants to have completed seven business courses prior to enrollment and usually within the past seven years (https://www.kellogg.northwestern.edu/pro ... ogram.aspx).

I would also recommend you consider EMBA programs both in the U.S. and abroad. Consider carefully where you wish to build your career and choose programs accordingly.

Of the schools you mentioned, HBS does not have an EMBA program and Stanford offers a Sloan Master's Program (https://www.gsb.stanford.edu/sloan/) that is structured differently.

Wharton, Kellogg, and Booth all have EMBA programs. Since Wharton does not have a part-time program (Kellogg and Booth both do) the average age of their EMBA students tends to be lower.

Thank you very much. I am considering EMBA at Wharton or part-time weekend MBA at Booth,Ross & Haas ? Do I need to improve my GMAT score? or just work on essays. Couple of days back, I got AWA score of 5.0.

Since I worked 11 years in USA, do I need to take TOEFL for above programs?
Please advise.

Applicants who have a degree from an English-speaking institution do not need to take the TOEFL. I would recommend you retake your GMAT to improve your score, especially since you have time. Wharton's EMBA application is historically due around February 1st while some of the others have even later deadlines. The averages for the part-time programs are in the mid to high 600's while Wharton EMBA is 700+.

Thank you very much Michael, you suggestions are very frank and direct. I should not feel good with 650 score.

I am thinking of re-taking GMAT. Your suggestion helps me.
In my Bachelors and Masters,in India, we were taught in English. Courses (or subjects) and exams were in English. Can I confidently ignore TOEFL or just give it to be worry free?

You can ignore the TOEFL (also everybody knows English is one of the official languages in India). But, I agree with your last post, do not ignore the GMAT. Retake the test to improve your competitiveness.
