I am a Pakistani national currently residing in England. I did my undergraduate studies from the number one business school in Pakistan, the Lahore University of Management Sciences. My graduation GPA was 2.72 in Accounting and Finance. The aforementioned program is the most competitive program at the University and the admission is only given to a select few based on the performance in A-Levels exams. There were 72 people in my batch who started in this program and only 38 graduated. The rest either dropped out of university or changed their majors. My low GPA was mainly because I was working over 40 hours a week to pay for my tuition and was also helping out my family as they were going through financial difficulties at that time. My university is one of the most expensive universities in Pakistan.

Upon completion of my undergradaute degree I came to UK to do a masters degree in International Economics and Finance from Cardiff University. My graduating grade was 2.1 which equates to US GPA between 3.0 and 3.6 on a scale of 4.0 (most websites equate the grade to 3.3 US GPA). Once again my grades were not outstanding because I was putting in around 40 hours a week to pay for my tuition by working beyond what is usually allowed to an international student.

Currently I am working for Ernst and Young in their assurance practice in England. I have recently completed my chartered accountancy exams (CPA in USA, but a lot harder to qualify) and my grades in the chartered accountancy exams are outstanding. I am ranked amongst the top performers at firm and work on some of the most important clients such as Hewlett Packard, Oracle, Siemens, etc. Before joining Ernst and Young in England, I worked for Standard Chartered Bank in Pakistan as associate in their Corporate Banking division and worked with clients in the commodities sectors which includes some of the largest clients in the energy, textiles, metals and mining sector. Therefore, my work experience to date is 3 and would be 4 years when I begin MBA in fall of 2011. I have progressed well within my career and my performance has regularly exceeded my peers' and surpassed expectations of my employers. Before joining Ernst and Young, I had offers to join investment banks such as Dresdner Kleinwort and BNP Paribas, but I felt joining Ernst and Young was the right choice given the global economic downturn and the opportunity to do Chartered Accountancy would actually give me the ideal opportunity to build an alternative transcript. Furthermore, Chartered Accountants upon completion of their training with Big 4 firms, leave to join investment banks and thus kept the option open for making a move into investment banking.

I have substantial extra curricular activities as well. I was captain of the football team during my undergraduate studies. I was elected president of the student council. I currently work as volunteer with one of the non-governmental organizations in Pakistan which aim to educate children working in sweat shops or begging on the streets. My main duties are to organize activities to raise funds in UK. I also am part of the team which organizes the Entrepreneur of the Year awards at Ernst and Young, which is one of the most prestigious business awards in UK. My work mainly revolves around identifying CEO's to be nominated for this award from multiple sectors and helping Partners at the firm in general management of this event.

My short-medium term goal post MBA is to become a successful investment banker in either New York or London and my medium-long term goal is to return to Pakistan to start my own investment bank. But my life long dream is to be involved in the development of the financial sector in Pakistan to ensure that I can play an important role in the economic development of the country which has long suffered from inadequate economic policies and lack of educated bureaucracy. At present I have a couple of offers from some of the most reputed investment banks in London but I want to do an MBA before embarking upon a career in investment banking as it would play a pivotal role in enhancing my entrepreneurial zeal which will be needed when I start my own investment bank.

My GMAT score is 710 and I was wondering about my chances of getting into one of the top MBA programs in US. I know that my low GPA would be a hindrance in my acceptance at one of the top MBA programs but it is purely because of the fact that I was working nearly full time during undergraduate studies to pay for my education. Otherwise I have always been exceptional in my academics. I had one of the best results for my batch in A-Levels Cambridge Board (Equivalent to US High School system). Furthermore, in the Chartered Accountancy exams I have scored extremely high marks (averaging more than 75% overall) and this qualification is way tougher than my undergraduate courses, thus proving that my poor grades are not due to lack of intellectual capability but because of my financial circumstances during my undergraduate and postgraduate years.

Hi Kareem,

Thanks for your post. I certainly think you can be competitive at the programs you've listed, however, you should plan to provide an explanation for your lowish GPA in both your undergrad and masters degree program. Working full time to pay for your tuition is admirable and certainly worth noting. I would suggest writing a brief optional essay for each program stating such.

In an effort to put together solid applications, I would suggest you opt to write about your extracurricular involvement in some of your essays (as it fits with the topic selection). This is a great way to stand out in the applicant pool and highlight teamwork and leadership skills while also drawing attention to your community involvement.

Best,

Stacey

I'm doing my MBBS(Medicine) in India , i will complete the course by april'10. I'm planning to take GMAT in october'10 and apply for '11 admissions in the USA. Typically Medicine is a 5 and half year course with a 1 year internship included where we get to work .Will it be considered as work experience or not?
I would have a paltry 8 months Work ex(internship excluded) when i shall be applying if my internship dpes not count as work experience.
Will my profile be good enough a case for the top 100 universities to consider?
Will my being a doctor be a strong enough case to consider?

Hi Abhi,

Thanks for your post. In the US it is not uncommon for those in medical school to seek their MBA. They often attend programs that offer this joint MD/MBA degree. Since you will be completing medical school prior to applying/attending business school and are doing the degree in a different country it will work a little differently for you.

I certainly think you can count the internship as work experience, however, I think the biggest issue for you is to be able to explicitly state why you wish to pursue an MBA rather than practice medicine. Being able to paint a clear picture for the adcom will be essential for successful bschool applications. I suggest you spend a great deal of time mapping out your short and long term post MBA goals. Pretty much every US bschool ask for them in an essay and you can bet you will certainly be asked in an interview.

Best,

Stacey

Thanks a lot for the reply ,
I would like to look at the top 20 - 50 universities offering only MBA rather than a joint MD/MBA.

Hi,

Sorry for the confusion. What I was attempting to state in my previous post is that it's not uncommon for those with MD's to seek out MBA's, however, you should be prepared to have a solid reason for seeking the MBA as well as clearly defined short and long term goals. I did not mean to insinuate that you should seek a MD/MBA given you will already have your MD when you apply to business school. My apologies for the confusion.

Best,

Im sorry for not being clear to you about my query.
I do not have MD , i will pass out of MBBS( undergrad medicine )in 2010 may and am looking for competitive schools in the bracket of 20 - 60 for the year 2011 .

I plan to give GMAT in Oct 2010.
I have 60% graduation percentage.(medicine)
Intermediate -(pre med school) - 94 %
Class X - 83 %

My extra circular background is as follows.
Organizing college events , participating in debates, Part of College based community development organization for 3 years where we adopted a slum and taught them classes and conducted health check ups every week.
Currently the treasurer of internship association.
Organized several blood donation programs, worked for pulse polio immunization programs.
Worked for HIV/AIDS awareness programs.
Represented my college in Tennis in Inter college competitions.
Also worked part time for a Multi-level Marketing(MLM Akin to Amway) company for 3 months in 2nd year.
Plan to work as an administrator in my father's hospital after my internship.
I wish to apply for 2011 August admissions in the USA. I have heard many schools in the US look for diversity amongst their students.
Do i stand a chance to get into the top 20 - 50 programs in the US with a good GMAT score?
If so what GMAT score should i consider competitive?

During my 3 month stint at the MLM company , i contributed 170,000 INR to the company.(directly contributed to 700,000INR ) .It requires convincing people to join the company , each person paying 7000 INR. I personally convinced 100+ people and total number of people under me is 250.
I worked part time for the company , so would it be considered as a good contribution and is it worth mentioning.?

Hi,

Yes, it certainly is worht mentioning your work experience, even if it was part time. You will still want to have a solid reason for seeking an MBA. Often adcoms become concerned when an applicant applies for an MBA immediately after finishing another advanced degree program. You don't want to appear as though you are a "degree collector," but rather be convincing that both degrees are critical to your future goals.

Best,
