Hi avanigupta,

Overall, your profile is decent. We would need to get into some subjective details to analyze your profile in depth. But as on overview:

Acads: Good. 700 in GMAT though is just below many schools' average, especially for Indians, is not low enough to write again. 3.4 GPA again falls into that range. So you would have to pick specific examples from your work to negate the bias.

Extra currics - strong.

Work experience - Accenture is a good brand name. So that's a plus. An experience of 3.5 years is a bit low, but the awards and ratings received suggest that your contribution to work has been above par. Make sure you cite relevant examples to highlight specific strengths, maybe analytical skills, leadership potential, or team skills... . Basically make sure you highlight your skills through relevant examples effectively.

The only concern maybe your career goals. They are vague right now. A good strategy is to make your short term goals specific by specifying which role / industry you wish to work in immediately after your MBA and how does an MBA fit into those. Then relate that role to your long term goal by specifying how your short term goals will lead to your long term vision. But be specific about your key takeaways from an MBA.

With these refinements, your profile will be competitive for ISB. Other school suggestions will depend on your career goals as each school caters to a particular need. Also it depends on your location preference, budget, class size, 1 yr vs 2 yr preference, etc.

Given you are still young, one suggestion would be to ty to take another job before business school and try to move in a more general management direction. The Indian software engineer profile is, as you know, quite prevalent, and not directly linked to the types of business activities that MBA programs most prize. So what about trying to go for a product management position, or a technical marketing position, or sales engineering....or something within Accenture outside of IT engineering?

I know this is not necessarily an easy transition in a tough economy, but it is a viable strategy to "change the game" and change your profile.

Hi,

I also wanted to add that I've started my own venture.. which is in a totally different field from my current profession.

Would this help in my admission process?

Hi,

Of course it will. You will have to clarify 2 things in your application:
1. Is the current venture related to your post MBA career? How will MBA fit in since you have already started your venture. Why not continue it?
2. What is the status of your current venture and what is your role in it?

We can have a brief discussion on the topic. Feel free to call us at +91 9560368899 for a discussion.

Hi Avani

A score above 700 is desirable when aiming for top institutes. You looks at several good top schools abroad. However GMAT alone won't determine your chances of admission; beyond the academics will also help you in determining your candidature and your work experience plays a vital role as well. In general most of the Indian applicants are from engineering background with a good 4-5 years of work experience. So you would need to differentiate yourself from others .

Start thinking what makes you unique and what's that 'hook' that will be key to your application. Make sure you follow the 'show rather than tell' principle so that the admissions committee could really understand your strengths and differentiating factors Although it is not just the work experience that counts but also what you did there like-what were your achievements, what initiative you took, what changes you drove in your workplace etc. So you need to ensure that in 4 years of work experience you have demonstrated the skills business schools are looking for. This could still put in a strong set of essays for you.

For ISB, I would recommend you retaking your GMAT as GMAT is weighed more heavily for ISB than it is for other schools. Have you considered the IIMs (Indian Institutes of Management) which are also excellent?

Hi,

I'm under the impression that you need a minimum of 5-7 years of experience for the IIM's.

Thanks,
Avani Gupta

Hi Avani,

You are right. Here's the criteria for IIMA, B and C:

IIMA PGPX: 27 years of age at the start of the program: https://www.iimahd.ernet.in/programmes/pgpx.html

IIMB EPGP: Minimum 7 years of full time experience
https://www.epgp.in/admission.aspx

IIMC PGPEX: Minimum 5 years of experience
https://programslive.iimcal.ac.in/pgpex/ ... ligibility

For you at this stage, among the Indian programs, ISB is the best suited. You can also check out Great Lakes Institute of Management Chennai. And of course if US and EU are open options, there are many schools you can apply. But of course incorporating the feedback given above.

Hi Avani,

Honestly your profile is neither very bad nor great. It has its own elements e.g. Accenture name, your extra currics which are good but the weak elements like an average GMAT score and an IT software developer role will pull it down.

As far as goals are concerned you can mention technology/GM/ consulting. Don't mention finance or Entrepreneurship as that will sound disconnected.

You can apply to ISB, NUS, Nanyang, CMU Tepper ( aspirational), Emory, Texas Mccombs, HEC Paris ( aspirational) .

Hope this helps
