I am currently in the summer between my junior and senior year in college and am intending to apply for the HBS 2+2 program (first cycle, July 10th).
College: Ivy league
Major: Social sciences (economics focus)
Senior thesis: going to be on effectiveness of a particular fiscal policy and its correlation with shifting trends in the tax code from 1980 to today
GPA: 3.87
GMAT: 760
SAT IIs: Math 800, Physics 800
ACT: 36
Extracurriculars:
1. VP of Finance in Student Government; chair committee which sets $7 million of tuition
2. President of a non-profit organization part of a larger international umbrella org during sophomore year; led my org to be ranked #1 (from #18) out of 43 during term
3. President of Public Service Org; can't go into too many details but led largest aggregate volunteer effort in the history of the school
4. VP of Investing Club; created valuation training program and quantitative algorithms
5. Executive Board member of organization which funds student organizations on campus using tuition
6. In a business fraternity; in charge of professional development and application to non-profit world
Honors:
1. Selected to give student speech at senior graduation next year
2. In senior Honor Society and voted president by peers
3. Named one of 3 "public servants of the year" at university
4. Currently on pace to graduate with highest honors available in program
5. Selected to attend the Clinton Global Initiative conference based on commitment to public service
Internships:
1. After freshman year: worked for top think tank in Washington DC doing economic policy, published an article about fiscal policy efficiency, co-mentioned as resource on two publications about importance of leadership in public sector, wrote a final research report comparing public sector to private sector efficiency
2. After sophomore year: worked at top economic government institution in DC (ie. NEC, Fed, Treasury) with pretty senior people, specialized in financial regulation, wrote final research paper on execution differences between Dodd-Frank and Basel III
3. After junior year (currently): Working at top investment bank (ie. GS, JPM, MS, Lazard) working on M&A deals pertaining to banks
Recommendations:
1. Boss from last summer (HBS alumni)
2. Adviser to both public service org and non-profit while I was president of each
Future career goals: I want to work in economic policy and regulation, and my pitch is that I've seen first hand the theory of the importance of leadership in the public sector, I've seen how it can be utilized working under an HBS alumnus in a policy setting last summer, and I will have developed both the economic understanding and industry experience which combined with an MBA will allow me to excel in the policy world.
Other notes:
Considering applying for dual degree (either JD/MBA or MBA/MPP)
I'm particularly worried about getting auto-dinged for 2+2 because of the investment banking internship seeing as how they've historically drifted away from those type of candidates. If you could shed some light on my chances/offer any advice on things to stress I would appreciate it greatly. Also if you have any insight into whether the dual degree would make a difference please let me know.
Thanks,
Kaiden
