Productivity Of Service Workers

Expert replies
by komal » Tue Mar 09, 2010 11:55 pm
Correctly measuring the productivity of service workers is complex. Consider, for example, postal workers: they are often said to be more productive if more letters are delivered per postal worker. But is this really true? What if more letters are lost or delayed per worker at the same time that more are delivered?

The objection implied above to the productivity measure described is based on doubts about the truth of which of the following statements?

(A) Postal workers are representative of service workers in general.

(B) The delivery of letters is the primary activity of the postal service.

(C) Productivity should be ascribed to categories of workers, not to individuals.

(D) The quality of services rendered can appropriately be ignored in computing productivity.

(E) The number of letters delivered is relevant to measuring the productivity of postal workers.

i choose D

the productivity is measeured by "letters delivered/ a postal worker"
the objection is --- although more letters are delivered per worker , more are lost or delayed

obviousely, it is arguing against how efficient the workers are doing their job, or quality of the services .

A. no other kind of service workers is implied in the question stem.
B. whether the work " delivery of letter" is primary or not is not the focuse.
C. it is discussing another thing about who should be measured; it is beyond the scope
E. it seems more like an assumption

i don't think my reasons are effective enough. i use my intuition and i just don't think ABCE are within the scop

can anyone help me !
it is not an "alice in wonderland". it is real! i am going to freak GMAT out!

But is this really true? What if more letters are lost or delayed per worker at the same time that more are delivered?

Stimulus says that calculating productivity is complex. The stimulus then takes the example of Postal Workers and goes on to tell us that delivering more letters does not equate to a more productive workers because quality of service is also important.

The objection implied above to the productivity measure described is based on doubts about the truth of which of the following statements?

We are looking for a statement which if true will support our conclusion.

(A) Postal workers are representative of service workers in general. It is an assumption, but does not support the conclusion, so out. This is a trap answer choice.

(B) The delivery of letters is the primary activity of the postal service. - Does not address the conclusion

(C) Productivity should be ascribed to categories of workers, not to individuals. Does not address the conclusion

(D) The quality of services rendered can appropriately be ignored in computing productivity. Yes, If this is true, our conclusion holds, if this is false, our conclusion is weakened. OUR WINNER

(E) The number of letters delivered is relevant to measuring the productivity of postal workers. Does not address the conclusion

the objection is actually against the measure / the method with which productivity is being found out.

That method considers only the numbers and not the quality. ( is the objection)

in other words, the method assumes that no other factor, apart from the number, is important while calculating the productivity.

Hence, the author doubts "Can this factor be ignored ?"
