Many medical professionals worry that millions of overweight Americans are in danger of developing serious health conditions later in life, such as diabetes , arthritis and certain forms of cancer.

A) are in danger of developing
B)are in danger to develop
C)have a danger of developing
D)are endangered by development
E)have a danger that they will develop

correct answer is A. Please explain me why A is right answer as C sounds equally correct. I am confused between A and C

A is the answer.

e.g.
People are in danger.
He is in danger.

C says Have a danger. This is just not idiomatic.
Wrong usage:
People have a danger.
He has a danger.

Thanks a lot for the explanation.I have one more SC question.
A local school board has passed a measure requiring principals provide parents with the course materials so as to improve the quality of their children's education.

A) provide parents with course materials so as to
B) to provide parents with course materials so as to
C) provide parents with course materials in order that they
D)to provide parents with course materials so that they can
E) provide parents with course materials and

D is right answer here. But I am not convinced. I think when word "requiring" appears then the sentence has subjunctive mood so the root form of the verb should be used. here dependent clause uses "to provide" rather than root form "provide". Secondly, in C "they" can refer back to either "parents","principals" or "course materials" . I think in the correct answer there is ambiguity in which noun "they" refers. I also tried to search a thread on noun reference by pronoun but could not find one. Can you suggest me a thread in which the concept of pronoun reference is given with good examples. Thanks a lot.

They are in danger of developing.. Vs They have danger of developing

"They are in danger of" means that they are going to face the danger. They should be careful.

"They have danger of" means that they possess the danger. They are the owner of danger.

There is a meaning difference between these two; therefore, only showing awkward is not correct explanation.

The issues:

The correct idiomatic expression with "require" are:

Require X to do y
Require that X be Y

We have "requiring principals........", so we need to find out "to + VERB"

Only B and D remain.

In the option B, so as to is not idiomatic. [Reference OG10.]

Answer is D.

Thanks again.

But can you clarify me why pronoun "they" is not ambiguous in its reference to preceding nouns. I have problem in the pronoun reference. I cannot decide when it is correctly referring and when it is not.Like here D has pronoun "they" which has 3 nouns to refer back . They are "parents", "principals" and "course materials" . I think here they can refer back to any of the three so why there is no pronoun reference error in the correct answer. Can you help me in this topic?

Lets look at this part

their is non underline part which clearly refers to parents.
Hence they is also definitely refers to parents.

they can improve the quality of their children's education.

"danger to " is idiomatic than "Danger of". So that makes us to pick B. Refer OG 11 SC 10.
