Replacement Mixture Questions

by Yvette726 » Wed Oct 23, 2013 6:49 am
Hi all,

Can anyone please recommend a good source to learn this concept? I watched the video from EmpowerGMAT on mixture problems and found it very helpful, but it didn't touch on replacement mixture problems. I still can't seem to understand this at all.

Thanks!

By "replacement questions," are you referring to mixture questions in which some volume of a mixture is removed and then replaced with some other volume? If so, the strategy is pretty much the same (just more time consuming). Having said that, this kind of replacement question is pretty rare on the GMAT.

For mixture questions, I often find it helpful to draw the mixtures with their components separated. This will allow you to visualize the question, and it makes it easy to add individual components.

I suggest that you try a few mixture questions to practice.

In the upper right corner is a search bar.
Enter "is replaced", and you'll get a selection of replacement/mixture problems.

Many mixture problems can be solved easily with an approach called alligation.
To get a list of problems that I've solved with alligation, enter "alligation" and "gmatguruny" into the search bar.

Hi Yvette726,

All mixture questions can be solved with some variation of the part/whole formula. If you have a specific question that you'd like to see solved, then you should list it here and I'll be happy to show you how to solve it.

Thank you Brent & Mitch for your responses. I will start by looking up the alligation method and to practice more problems.

And Rich, I will post the question on the board. If you could explain it using the Part/Whole formula you demonstrated that would be great help, as so far that's the only way i find useful in helping me understand the whole mixture concept.
