In the US, 13% of the gasoline sold for use in automobiles in 1988 was leaded; the rest was unleaded. Cars manufactered after 1975 were designed to use only unleaded gasoline, and these get higher mileage per gallon of gasoline on average than do pre-1975 automobiles. In 1988, 18% of autmobiles used only leaded gasoline.
Which of the following is best supported by the statements above?
A. by 1988 leaded gasoline was banned in many areas bc of health concerns over lead contents in emissions from automobiles that run on leaded gasoline
B. Some leaded gasolines provide a higher performance level than do many unleaded gasolines, and many drivers prefer a higher-performance fuel.
C. Pre-1975 automobiles can run on both leaded and unleaded gasoline.
D. Automobiles using only leaded gasoline were driven, on avg, fewer miles in 1988 than the average for all automobiles.
E. In 1988 some pre-1975 cars were equipped with new engines designed to use only unleaded gasoline.

The OA is D
Can someone explain pls?

A --- Out of scope quite clearly
B --- drivers' interest is not mentioned in the passage.
C --- passage didnt mention antyhing about the non leaded gasoline sale.
E ---- out of scope as there is no way we can assume this to be true without providing stimulus to this in the passage..

D--- by POE it obviously becomes true.. :P

Here, we have three evidences:

1. In 1988 gasoline consumption is composed by 13% leaded and 87% unleaded.
2. Cars that use only unleaded gasoline get higher mileage per gallon of gasoline on average
3. In 1988, 18% of autmobiles used only leaded gasoline.

Now, we have to find a conclusion:

In 1998, If average mileage made by cars that use only leaded gasoline were equal to the avg mileage made by cars that use only unleaded gasoline than from evidence 2 we would expect that the leaded gas consumption to be greater than 18%, but it was 13% so the avg miles made by " only leaded cars" must be lower than the total avg.
