Hi,

Please help. I found few links but people have discussed about "because of Vs due". I am confused between D and E.
E looks parallel but explanation says it is wordy and bodies must be bodies' because of possessive case.

Can someone please elaborate on bodies must be bodies' with an example ?


Two new studies indicate that many people become obese more due to the fact that their bodies burn calories too slowly than overeating.

A) due to the fact that their bodies burn calories too slowly than overeating

B )due to their bodies burning calories too slowly than to eating too much

C )because their bodies bum calories too slowly than that they are overeaters

D )because their bodies bum calories too slowly than because they eat too much

E) because of their bodies burning calories too slowly than because of their eating too much

There is a parallel construction : more ... than ad so the two constructs should be parallel.

B and C break that parallelism, in B : more due to... than to... is enough to discredit this option, while in C more because...than that, is obviously not parallel.

A is obviously wordy, dure to the fact that ...

So DE are left as contenders. Looks close. E seems to have a passive construction, their eating too much, and their bodies burning calory too slowly. Even without going in possessive discussion of *bodies* vs *bodies'*, since D contains an active cnstruct without any noticeable issue, I will choose D and move on.

If this is a case then it is easy. I never thought about eliminating option E on the basis of passive voice.

But as book says "bodies must be bodies' because the possessive case is required before a gerund". In this case bodies burning

What if any other question comes asking about the same possessive case then what ?

usage of "because" and "that" in the same sentence in GMAT should be avoided...............

yes, as long as there is an correct active voice opyion you may discard the passive one, but in few cases passives are an credited options, particularly in scenario where agent is not meaningful, such as in scientific/technical one.

That said, you can safely eliminate an option based on voice, if active one's are error free.

yes, in given scenario, that u explained *bodies'* is reuired.

If i think "their bodies burning calories" (incorrect)
"their bodies' burning calories" (This makes sense)

I was missing something.

Because X than because Y, where X and Y are clauses, and option D has done this.

Hi All,

Is there any other good reason to eliminate E ? Book says wordiness and awkward, but in my opinion this choice is perfectly parallel. I read in the above post about passive construction, but i have seen that most of the passive sentences are correct.

Any valid reason to eliminate E. I will definitely stumble if both D and E are given in the exam. I will fall. This is for sure.

Please expert reply on this.

Its adjective - participles.

Ing verbs without an auxiliary verbs are always an adjective.

The child is playing on the field. --- "is playing" is the main verb
The child playing on the field is mine. --- "is" is the main verb , "playing" is a participle here.

Please note : At times even ing-verb with an auxiliary verb can act an adjective. This is dependent on the surrounding words.

Jessica is charming to the reporters. -- "charming" is an adjective predicate, "is" is the main verb, "to the reporters" is an adverb of reception.
Jessica is charming the reporters. -- "is charming" is a main verb,"the reporters" is the object.

Construction is "Independent Clause,Dependent Clause" and E lacks verb due to which second part does not remain a Dependent Clause.

Between C and D, imo, D for being parallel.
