I think this is the point which the author wants to convey.

Thus C is the option which captures this relationship.

I agree with Ruplun, just because a choice starts with 'Because' doesnt means that is incorrect.
Also we cannot negate an answer choice just because it contains BEING.

Regarding choices A and D which start with 'Due To'
I read somewhere that 'Due To' is same as 'Caused By' and can be used interchangably.
When replaced by 'Caused By' both of these options turn turtle.

As for C it seems like the author is going to talk about 'temperament' in what follows, as in,
'His temperament fueled by a distrust of technology..... got even worse when he heard the noise of the machines around him'

So it is not a good option

As for option E, it introduces a new information 'his own lack of trust'

and ' distrust of ' is a usable expression.it fits in this context.
