Philippine Nation!

by gmat_perfect » Fri Jul 16, 2010 3:28 am
Results from the 1998 National Demographic and Health Survey confirm that, even when compared with densely populated countries like Thailand and Indonesia, the Philippine nation's fertility rates consistently exceed all of its Southeast Asian neighbors.

(A) like Thailand and Indonesia, the Philippine nation's fertility rates consistently exceed all of
(B) like Thailand and Indonesia, the Philippine nation consistently exhibits fertility rates exceeding all
(C) such as Thailand and Indonesia, the fertility rates exhibited by the Philippine nation are consistently exceeding those of all
(D) such as Thailand and Indonesia, the Philippine nation's fertility rates consistently exceed all those of
(E) such as Thailand and Indonesia, the Philippine nation consistently exhibits fertility rates that exceed those of all
OA: E
I am in confusion between C and E.

What are faults in C?

Thanks.

ya C and E are left to be choosen for answer

E looks more concise than C

C- the fertility rates exhibited by the Philippine nation are consistently exceeding
E- the Philippine nation consistently exhibits fertility rates that exceed

hence E is choosen

(C) such as Thailand and Indonesia, the fertility rates exhibited by the Philippine nation are consistently exceeding those of all

(E) such as Thailand and Indonesia, the Philippine nation consistently exhibits fertility rates that exceed those of all

I am in confusion between C and E.

What are faults in C?
Because there is a comparison, Parallelism is in play. Furthermore, like-things should be compared. Simplified versions of C and E state:

C) Results confirm that, even when compared with populated countries, the fertility rates of the Phillipines...

E) Results confirm that, even when compared with populated countries, the Phillipines...

E is a lot better than C because it offers a parallel comparison between countries and the Phillipine nation. C in contrast offers an illogical comparison betweeen countries and the fertility rates of the Phillipine nation.

Hope that helps,

Hi Patrick,

I could not understand how C makes illogical comparison: the fertility rates exhibited by the Philippine nation are consistently exceeding those of all => the fertility rates of Philippine nation are consistently exceeding the fertility rates of all neighbors

Pls help. Thanks

gmat_perfect

Let me explain why C is wrong :

Results from <X> confirm that, even when compared with densely populated countries

such as Thailand and Indonesia, the fertility rates exhibited by the Philippine nation are consistently exceeding those of all
..

So we are comparing 'countries' with 'the fertility rates'

Hope it will help.

Pnk,
In answer C, focus on "when compared with populated countries, the fertility rates..." This is a comparison between "countries" and "fertility rates". That's why C is illogical. The fact that you understand what the author is trying to compare (rates of populated countries vs rates of Philippine nation) doesn't change that the way C is written is incorrect. C does not line up with what the author intends to compare. If you have trouble with comparisons, set topic='Parallelism, Comparison' and difficulty='500-600 & 600-700' in the Drill Generator.

C compares nations with the fertile rates. It is wrong.

Therefore, E is correct

Final solution at one place:

Important: The purpose of this post (and all the other posts by me) is to give a complete solution to all GMAT-Prep Verbal questions at one place. Sometimes students have to wade through dozens of posts to get to the final answer. My posts will give one complete and crisp solution required to arrive at the correct answer by eliminating the wrong one. Some of the content in these posts may have been taken from various other sources (discussion forums).

'Like' is not the correct choice in this construction. Also, the GMAT prefers 'such as' to 'like'. This eliminates A and B.

A, C, and D compare 'Thailand and Indonesia' and 'fertility rates' ... wrong comparison.

B compares 'fertility rates' to 'Southeast Asian neighbors (countries) ... wrong comparison.

E: Correct
