linguistic makeup

by Phirozz » Tue Aug 03, 2010 10:04 pm
Part of the linguistic makeup of every ethnic group on the planet, word units evolve through various mechanisms and take on new meanings over time, eventually acquiring so different a connotation that later definitions no longer resemble its original semantic meaning.

(A) word units evolve through various mechanisms and take on new meanings over time, eventually acquiring so different a connotation
(B) word units evolve by various mechanisms and take on new meanings over time, and they eventually acquire so different a connotation
(C) word units evolve by various mechanisms, assume new meanings over time, and eventually they acquire so different a connotation
(D) the word unit evolves by various mechanisms and assumes new meanings over time, eventually acquiring so different a connotation
(E) the word unit evolves through various mechanisms, assumes new meanings over time, and eventually it acquires so different a connotation
What's the correct ans D or E ? Please help
IMO D

Part is singular, so we need the word unit. Evolves and assumes are parallel.

IMO D.

D over E because, in D evolves over X and Y .. the X and Y describes various mechanisms .. whereas in E .. even .. eventually describes various mechamisms .. whereas it should point to the subject .. which is 'Part of .. '.

OA please .. !!

What is the source for this question?

I think that "part" does not have any relation with "word unit" or "word units". I think both B and D are grammatically correct.

Please cite the source of this question.

Thanks.

Part of the book......................, the chapter
Part of the movie........................, the climax

Does it make sense?

Parts of the book......................, some chapters
parts of the movie...................., the fight scenes

nonunderlined part says its original semantic meaning, where 'its' refers to 'word unit', so it can't be plural.

D and E left. Can anybody explain why D is better than E

It in option (e) is redundant

Narrowed down to D and E.
I chose E over D as D breaks the parallelism. "evolves...assumes...acquiring".
E on the other hand maintains that.

Though part of is singular it is not necessary that we must have word unit and not word units

Ok, now I got this sentence after selecting A. I was wrong and think D is correct answer.

As per my previous post, though part of is singular it can take word unit or word units. However, in case of this sentence it must take word unit. How to decide whether unit or units, see non underlined part of the sentence. It has 'its' in it and this its decides about unit or units. Unit is correct here. Eliminate A,B and C

Out of D and E, D maintains the parallelism, so D is correct

OA is E

But I feel it should be D, E breaks parallelism because of ''it acquires''. It should be only 'acquire'
