I would like to know if I can apply to Tier 1 Universities (Kellogg, Wharton, Booth etc) with this profile, for I fear that my undergrad school might affect my application.
Kindly revert to me with your views/comments in this regard. I will be grateful if you can include suggestions on how I can improve my profile to make it fit for the top league Universities.

Thanks,
Prashanth

Dear Prashanth,
Well, at this point since you are two years away from applying and without your GMAT its hard to "evaluate" you, but that's okay... you have plenty of time!! And vry wisely are thinking about this NOW!!!

So of course acing your GMAT is one of the key things that will help you most. But since you have two more years also look to get involved!!
What I mean is:
1. LEADERSHIP - TAKE any and every leadership position you can. Be it to lead community events, to become a trainer at work, to manage people. SEEK THIS OUT!!!
2. VOLUNTEERING - Very few candidates have REAL, deep volunteering experience. This can be anything from political activism, to helping the blind or whatever.... but the Adcoms know the difference between someone who tutors here and there, and someone who dedicates every Sunday of his life to the Red Cross. You want to be in the latter category. Also, the more you move up in volunteering, the more leadership opportunities you will have (to do awesome stuff like lead a fundraising campaign for example)

Hope this helps!

Hi,

Thanks for the response.I will definitely work on the points mentioned.

Just wanted to know how important is the undergrad school when it comes to shortlisting of candidates by the university (say, for example, any top B-School for finance). As mentioned, I graduated from a regional engineering college affiliated to Anna University. It is considered to be one of the best in the state of Tamilnadu, though cant be compared to NITs or IITs! Hence I fear this might go against me .

Thanks again,
Prashanth

Having a good brand in your resume definitely helps. But, if you have a decent GMAT score/ GPA, you should not worry about it. The adcom should be satisfied with your ability to cope up with the academic rigor of the MBA program. Amongst the Indian students at B-schools in U.S., there are plenty of non IITians.

For absolute Top schools (HBS, etc.) having a Top school does help you a lot. You will see that the majority of people they pull will come from IITs (maybe they don't know some other schools?? :) ) So, you are at a disadvantage as compared to them, which means that you'll just have to make up for it in other ways!
