Argument
Two years ago Nova High School began to use interactive computer instruction in three academic subjects. The school dropout rate declined immediately and last year's graduates have reported some impressive achievements in college. In future budgets the school board should use a greater portion of the available funds to buy more computers and all schools in the district should adopt interactive computer instruction throughout the curriculum.
In the aforesaid argument, the author tries to imply two things. Firstly, he tries say that with the introduction of interactive computer instruction, the dropout ratio has declined drastically. Secondly, he mentions that the performances of the graduates have shown immensely excellent progress. Thus we can conclude that there has been an optimistic change at Nova school with the introduction of computers. However, after analyzing the topic, I feel that too much emphasis on computer education will prove expensive as well as tedious.
I believe that computer is a revolutionary way to impart education as it is a self learning tool. Introducing computer interactive program would mean pumping more funds. However, not all districts can enforce computer education as there are budgeting issues. There are regions in the districts that are poor, so the boards in all schools cannot utilize greater portion of funds for the purchase of computers. Hence maximizing the usage of computer for schools as well as graduating degrees would not be feasible. We do not have realistic and recent statistics to prove the percentage change in the dropout rate and graduates performances. The author should provide us the number of students in his survey and the subject's used which would help us establish a cause-effect relationship between the tremendous progress and previous declines. Possibly the drastic changes in the dropout ratio and marked performances might be due to active involvement of parents, counseling sessions and training programs. Moreover, there are some subjects like arts and crafts that are learnt by human interaction and observation. It depends on one's creativity and any machine cannot capture the creativity. It can also be inferred that the teachers and staff do not co-operate for the upliftment of the student's performances which might be the reason of earlier decline.
In conclusion, the recommendation that Nova High should spend a greater portion of available funds on the purchase of additional computers and adopt interactive computer instruction throughout the curriculum is ill-founded. In my opinion, the above argument is based on co-incidences .There is no strong evidence that demonstrates the decline in the dropout rate and the impressive performance is due to adoption of interactive computer instruction.
