annie and stephanie are running a 5000 meters race,anne finishes the race 40s before stephanie,if it is known that stephanies speed while running was 25m/s. what was annies speed?

A 20 M/S
B 28.75 M/S
C 31.25 M/S
D 34.50 M/S

Distance = 5000

Time of A = TIme of S - 40s

5000/A = 5000/25 - 40

5000/A = 200 - 40

5000/A = 160

A = 5000/160 = 31.25

Stephanie's time = d/r = 5000/25 = 200 seconds.
Since Annie finishes 40 seconds earlier, Annie's time = 200-40 = 160 seconds.
Thus, Annie's rate = d/t = 5000/160 = 125/4 = 31.25 meters per second.

The correct answer is C.

The solutions that Mitch and theCodeToGMAT provided are great.
I just thought I'd mention that, once you get the point where you know the answer is 125/4, you can quickly find the correct answer by first recognizing that, since 120/4 = 30, 125/4 must be GREATER than 30.
So, we can ELIMINATE A and B
Next recognize that any odd integer divided by 4 always ends with either .25 or .75
This means we can ELIMINATE D, to get C as the correct answer.
