Plan to Improve Quant Score in 30 Days?

by CKelly89 » Sat Oct 26, 2013 4:21 pm
Hi Everyone,

Today I took my first GMAT exam and I'm quite disappointed in my score of 640 (39Q, 38V). My strength has always been in verbal and math has always been a big challenge. I studied for several months utilizing all of the MGMT quant and verbal guides, along with doing all of the PS questions in the OG13 and the majority of the DS in OG13.

Does anyone have a good study plan or free tools that I could utilize to bring up my quant score? During the exam, I found I had the most trouble with questions pertaining to number properties. The DS questions that involved abstract NP were quite difficult. During the exam, I found the quant questions to be worded differently than the MGMAT problems I had been practicing with and I think this could be one reason for my low score.

Here are some of my practice CAT scores:

MGMAT (1): 540
MGMAT (2): 590
MGMAT (3): 580
MGMAT (4): 610
MGMAT (5): 620
GMATPrep (1): 580
GMATPrep (2): 650

Any advice or links to great quant tools?

Thanks!

Hi CKelly89,

You've listed your overall scores from your practice CATs, but can you include the Scaled Scores for the Quant and Verbal sections. This data will be useful in determining how your GMAT performance varied relative to your practice.

Also, what is your goal score?

Hi CKelly89,

To improve your quantitative score, I believe that you should compartmentalize your learning and take the time to master each topic (e.g., percents, ratios, exponents, statistics, etc). This means that, for each topic, you should:
1) Learn the underlying concepts (rules, attributes, notation, etc.)

2) Learn GMAT-specific strategies related to that topic

3) Practice dozens of questions all related to that one topic. To focus on one topic at a time (e.g., number propertie), you can use Beat The GMAT's tagging feature to isolate one concept. For example, here are all of the questions tagged as number properties questions: https://www.beatthegmat.com/forums/tags/ ... properties
See the left side of that linked page for more tag options

4) Don't stop working on that topic until you have mastered it

Then, and only then, move on to the next topic.

While completing questions from the Official Guide (OG), I suggest that you use an Error Log (aka Improvement Chart). You can find a free downloadable Improvement Chart here: https://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/gmat-error-log. This will help you identify and strengthen your weak areas.

I also suggest that you spend a lot of time reviewing the responses from the Experts on this site. They model the steps one should take when tackling math problems.

Cheers,
Brent
