The financial crash of October 1987 demonstrated that the world's capital markets are integrated more closely than never before and events in one part of the global village may be transmitted to the rest of the village-almost instantaneously.

(A) integrated more closely than never before and
(B) closely integrated more than ever before so
(C) more closely integrated as never before while
(D) more closely integrated than ever before and that
(E) more than ever before closely integrated as

My Reasoning:

C) more...as -wrong

E) wrong comparison using AS (markets vs events)

Now to choose between A, B and D.

A) more closely than never before? Doesn't make sense to compare something with nothing.

B) The meaning here is a little off. The point is that the markets are more closely integrated but the sentence created with this choice conveys that it's not the degree of integration that has changed, but rather that there was a change in the prevalence of close integration.

D) This meaning is better. The markets are more closely integrated and events may be...

So the best answer is D.

Hi Marty,

B is definitely wrong choice!

B says integration of capital markets has increased in number but the meaning of original sentence is to convey the degree of closeness of integration and NOT the increment in integration.

Does this sounds correct? Please share your thoughts.

Yes. B is so wrong, and you nailed why. LOL. Going to edit my answer above.
