By applying the rules (I am assuming that the underlined portion is the only one that I can change)
Sentence 17 - The network security team is responsible for
1: detection of new viruses = Complex Gerund
2: creation of software patches to block those viruses = Action Noun
By not applying the rules
Sentence 17 - The network security team is responsible for
1: detecting new viruses = Simple Gerund
2: creation of software patches to block those viruses = Action Noun
The above is in line with the list in OG#64

alcohol consumption (or consumption of alcohol)
Ideally I will like the following:
Sentence 17 - The network security team is responsible for

Ideally I would make it parallel as follows:
Sentence 18 - He received a medal for
1: sinking an enemy ship = Simple Gerund
2: capturing its crew = Simple Gerund (convert action noun into gerund form)
My head is now spinning with this discussion. Somehow I feel that I should not worry about these rules and just follow logic and consistency.
