paradox

by finance » Fri Aug 12, 2011 8:37 am
It is strange that in Sentacity there are so many corner shops selling food items. After all there are many supermarkets in the city which sell food at cheaper prices, and many of these supermarkets are open 24-hours.

Which of the following, if true, would be of least help in explaining the paradoxical observation?

A. The corner shops are selling specialist food items not available in the supermarkets.
B. The supermarkets are mostly located on the outskirts of the city and require residents to use cars or public transport to reach them.
C. The main business of the local shops is newspaper distribution and food items represent a small part of their turnover.
D. The corner shops are mainly family-owned businesses and have been there for much longer than the supermarkets and are perceived as an important feature of the community.
E. The corner shops are willing to make home deliveries.

What's wrong with A?

The corner shops sell food items that the super markets do not sell. This gives a clear reason for the existence of corner shops alongside super markets.

@badpoem: question asks least,
@subbu: option E:The corner shops are willing to make home deliveries.

it doesnt explicitly states any advantage or something like that over the supermarket as other options do.Furthermore, its not given anywhere that supermarkets dont have home delivery. So is one of the least ones to resolve the paradox. Hence the answer.

Oh My!! Thanks for pointing it out.

A. The corner shops are selling specialist food items not available in the supermarkets. --. tells us the reason.

B. The supermarkets are mostly located on the outskirts of the city and require residents to use cars or public transport to reach them. --> corner shops are well, shops located at the corner of streets. So accessibility is the reason.

C. The main business of the local shops is newspaper distribution and food items represent a small part of their turnover. --> Food is less on priority here. So not much of competition from Super markets.

D. The corner shops are mainly family-owned businesses and have been there for much longer than the supermarkets and are perceived as an important feature of the community. --> heritage, perhaps.

E. The corner shops are willing to make home deliveries. --> We do not know whether Super markets deliver food. So, this is the answer, atleast by POE.

Yes I would go with E too then. What's the OA?

How does D explain the paradox? By merely being an important feature of the community how does that explain why people shop more at the corner shops?

Which of the following, if true, would be of least help in explaining the paradoxical observation?

QUESTION STEM: RESOLVE THE PARADOX. SO LOOK FOR OPTIONS THAT MENTION BOTH SIDES/EXPLAIN BOTH SIDES.

PARADOX: FOOD IS CHEAP IN SUPERMARKETS.THEY ARE OPEN 24 HRS. BUT STILL CORNER SHOPS ARE MANY COMAPRED TO SUPER MARKETS.

A. The corner shops are selling specialist food items not available in the supermarkets.

STATES ADVANTAGE OF ONE SIDE OVER THE OTHER....PARADOX RESOLVED
B. The supermarkets are mostly located on the outskirts of the city and require residents to use cars or public transport to reach them.

CORNER SHOPS ARE JUST AROUND THE CORNER SHOPS I.E. NEAR TO YOUR LOCATION. THIS INFO COMBINED WITH THE ABOVE OPTION B, RESOLVES THE PARADOX
C. The main business of the local shops is newspaper distribution and food items represent a small part of their turnover.

REVISIT. ONLY ONE SIDE IS MENTIONED.
D. The corner shops are mainly family-owned businesses and have been there for much longer than the supermarkets and are perceived as an important feature of the community.

ADVANTAGE OF ONE SIDE OVER THE OTHER SIDE MENTIONED. SO RESOLVES THE PARADOX

E. The corner shops are willing to make home deliveries.

REVISIT. ONLY ONE SIDE IS MENTIONED.

NOW, CONFUSED BETWEEN C AND E.HELP NEEDED. BOTH OPTIONS ARE MENTIONING/EXPLAINING ONLY ONE SIDE IE CORNER SHOPS

C is out of scope! It brings in some other reason along with it.

E is where we still have an doubt on whether Super markets have home delivery or not!
