"X happened so that Y could happen"

"So" introduces a clause of purpose/result, explaining the reason for the action in the main clause.

Other alternatives of construction:
* "X .. in order to Y"
* "X.. in order that Y may/might ... " -- "Would" CANNOT come in place of "may/might".

I have a query on this rule Possessive Pronouns can refer back to ONLY Possessive nouns.. Below is one question from Kaplan where its is used to refer to Estonia in the OA(E). Can someone please explain? I picked C just because in it its refers to Estonia's

Unlike its fellow Baltic nations, Latvia and Lithuania, the economy of Estonia grew at an astonishing rate in the late 1990s, and at the end of the decade it was placed on the fast track to join the european union.

A. same as above

B. its fellow Baltic nations, Latvia and Lithuania, Estonia's economy grew at an astonishing rate in the late 1990s, and at the end of the decade was placed on the fast track to join

C. its fellow Baltic nations, Latvia and Lithuania, Estonia's economy grew at an astonishing rate in the late 1990s, and at the end of the decade they were placed on the fast track to join

D. Latvia and Lithuania, its fellow Baltic nations, the economy of Estonia grew at an astonishing rate in the late 1990s, and at the end of the decade was placed on the fast track to join

E. Latvia and Lithuania, its fellow Baltic nations, Estonia possessed an economy that grew at an astonishing rate in the late 1990s, and at the end of the decade the country was placed on the fast track to join

C. its fellow Baltic nations, Latvia and Lithuania, Estonia's economy grew at an astonishing rate in the late 1990s, and at the end of the decade they were placed on the fast track to join
In C, there is wrong comparison. Let me write the sentence.
Unlike its fellow Baltic nations, Latvia and Lithuania, Estonia's economy grew at an astonishing rate in the late 1990s, and at the end of the decade they were placed on the fast track to join the european union.

The sentence here is trying to compare the nations-Latvia and Lithuania, with Estonia's economy which is wrong.

The sentence would have been correct if it clearly stated the economies in the starting phrase. I am not sure though.
(I want others to correc t me if i am wrong)

Unlike the economy of its fellow Baltic nations, Latvia and Lithuania, Estonia's economy grew at an astonishing rate in the late 1990s, and at the end of the decade they were placed on the fast track to join the european union.

Also, I have a query here for other readers. Would the sentence be right if it stated
Unlike that of its fellow Baltic nations, Latvia and Lithuania, Estonia's economy grew at an astonishing rate in the late 1990s, and at the end of the decade they were placed on the fast track to join the european union.

"In that":

"In that" is a conjunction that means "inasmuch as". "In that" has largely gone out of use. It is considered stilted and overly formal.

Avoid such usage when a better word is available.

Aggravate Vs Aggravating:

Aggravate --> to make worse
Aggravating --> widely interpreted to mean "annoying". Use it based on the context of the sentence.

"Act like" Vs "Act as":

Act is followed by "like" to mean -- "to behave or comport onself" and describes the action of a person.

"Act as" describes the function of a thing.

When "doubt" is used in a NEGATIVE CONTEXT such as "there is NO doubt" OR "he does NOT doubt", it should be followed by "that".

In other contexts, "whether"/"If" should be used to introduce a clause following "doubt".
E.g: I doubt whether he will come.
