Hi Nightreader,

I have one doubt in this i.e is the sentence not using subjunctive mood i,e "if the density of the timber wolf population"...................so shouldn't we take this sentence in the following manner "if I were a pilot"?????

i selected E because I fell for subjunctive mood :-(

the one you selected "subject ... would, IF subject ... were " conditional - unreal, needs to follow this rule, i.e. not will BUT would

A wildlife expert predicts that the reintroduction of the caribou into northern Minnesota would fail if the density of the timber wolf population in that region is more numerous than one wolf for every 39 square miles.

original sentence above, three cases are possible
1) regular action - no conditionals
2) real conditionals, and
3) unreal conditionals

we don't know what is the idea conveyed by author in this sentence - i.e. regular, real or unreal - unless we follow the grammatical structure of this sentence

none of the answer choices are correctly reflecting the conditionals except for D

A-violates with "would+is" SHOULD BE "will +is" OR "would+were"
B-does so with "would, confusion with provided ... + is" SHOULD BE "will +is" OR "would+were"
C-"should +was" ------- the same
D-correctly put as "will+is"
E-incorrect "will + were" SHOULD BE "will +is" OR "would+were"
