Please see the post of the Ron below where he is of the opinion that the rules that written above are followed....

Oh God!

I posted this question because I was not very certain about the concept of this question.

But in the end, after having 3 pages long discussion I am yet to figure out which rules apply and which rules don't.

Now I am more confused than I was before posting this question.

@Ketkoag : I am sorry friend. I am totally confused now. Please go through the thread discussion again from the beginning till this post and would be there where I am now

what is the source of this question ??? if the question is from 1000 SC the OA might be wrong.

IMO it is C .

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

if you have just ONE OF THE + PLURAL NOUN + WHO/THAT + ______, and it's NOT "the only one", THEN "____" MUST be a PLURAL VERB.

zero exceptions.

if the "ONLY ONE OF" is present the below rule applies.

THE ONLY ONE OF THE + PLURAL NOUN + WHO/THAT + ______ requires a SINGULAR verb for the "_____".

------ Explantion by ron and erin ---------

To avoid confusion it is better to send a PM to one of the instructors to comment on OA.

Source : Old paper Tests by ETS.

The OA is B and the source can be trusted.

this is one of our (mgmat) questions. the answer is (b).

here's a reference to another thread in which i posted the correct way to resolve these sorts of things:
https://www.beatthegmat.com/one-of-the-t ... tml#167563

the rules i cited in that post do not have exceptions.

this is the problem with people randomly posting questions without answers. ALWAYS POST THE ANSWER ALONG WITH ANY QUESTION. always always always.

this is absolutely necessary. ideally you should use the "spoiler" function, or put a little space between the question and the answer, but you MUST post the answer given in the source.
i've seen lots and lots of threads, like this one, in which a solid majority of the posters have the wrong answer. we need to counteract this trend by posting answers to all questions.

I got a set of papers from my university senior and the folder was named OLD Paper Tests along with some notes of Bangus Brutal etc etc. This questions comes from there. It may be a MGMAT question, but since it changed so many hands that even I don't know its exact source.

Moreover, this question is very common in notes(P.Sahil, Bangus Brutal ,800 BoB etc etc.)

What was important for me to learn the question and certain your posts Helps. Thanks a lot.

I used to post answers along with the question using spoilers. But unfortunately Some Brilliant minds came up with OUT of the BOX innovative solution once they found the OA.And that confused me a lot instead of clearing my doubt.

From next time onwards I would edit the original question with the OA after few responses. That would be beneficial for all.

Thanks Ron. Can you please tell what will be the case in the following four and are there any constructs from the below that are wrong in GMAT ?

1. only One of the Xs <singular>/<plural>
2. only One of the Xs that/who <singular>/<plural>
3. "the" only One of the Xs <singular>/<plural>
4. "the" only One of the Xs that/who <singular>/<plural>

that's not a bad idea.
it seems a bit high-maintenance on your end - you'd have to wait until there were enough posts to make a decent discussion, but NOT wait TOO long (to the point where it gets ridiculous).
if you're keeping a tight enough watch, though, i suppose it may be possible.

Thanks All.

Based on the above discussion and on other thread, I suppose that the set of rules becomes like:

1. One of the Xs that/who <plural>
2. One of the Xs <singular>
3. only One of the Xs <singular>
4. only One of the Xs that/who <plural>
5. "the" only One of the Xs that/who <singular>

Please tell if I am missing something here.

Perfect. Well Said.

Mohit, I was thinking to start up a thread where we can all have these sort of rules at one single place. I need your advice on that.

However, we can strictly omit the basic concepts and focus on the rules and exceptions which we find in GMAT exam.

Need your Opinion.

IMO that will be a good initiative.

If we can have one single place to look for all these sort of subtleties then it will be really great....

Thanks
Mohit
