HELP: GMAT Prep thus far

by aanchalsinha » Sun Jul 10, 2011 7:28 pm
Hi,

My exam is in approximately a month's time. Since the past 2 weeks I have attempted around 3 - 4 practice tests (Manhattan + GMAT Prep). My score averages around 600 Q43-46, V23-28 I am simultaneously working through the Master GMAT weekly course aswell. My score doesnt seem to have improved. I would like my score to be 50 - 60 points higher. I seem to be making a few (4-5) silly mistakes in Math every test. I feel like I am not identifying the key areas that I need to improve. Verbal is not my strength (pretty obvious), areas I struggle with are SC and CR.

So, I figure either this is my best score, or as I said, I'm unable to identify the weak areas. Could I get a second opinion and also what I should try to improve my score.

Thanks

I do not wanna look like an expert, but I think you have to improve the 4-5 silly mistakes count. Even I tended to make these mistakes and I knew mainly it was because I was not reading simple things like integer a. I consider a to be all kinds of real numbers and then get the answer wrong. I tried to work on it and have improved now.
If quant can come up to 48 and Verbal to 30, your score will improve to the levels you are expecting.

You said you struggle with SC and CR. RC is ok with you?
SC: If you think it is late to get into MGMAT SC, go for Aristotle SC grail. Solve all OG questions. Get learnings out of each of those OG questions. Once you get a hang of it, you will improve.
CR: OG Practice. If you have time, try LSAT CR(www.aristotleprep.com has a compilation). If you can manage more time, I recommed Powerscore CR Bible.
Vineesh,
Just telling you what I know and think. I am not the expert. :)

Hey Vineesh,

Thanks for your response. Well I do have Manhattan's SC guide and had gone through it but a couple of months ago. I guess I need to bring it out again and like you said do all OG qs. Do you think I should go through the manhattan SC material again or get straight into practice? I think I find CR tougher and again I have the Mnahattan guide for that too. I struggle with time for CR qs. Master GMAT material has helped me tackle RC questions much better.

With Math, my weaknesses are probability, combinations, word problems (algebra mostly and geometry occassionally)and some number properties qs.

Also, I think because my score is not improving, I'm getting extremely worried/anxious/tensed/confused as to what the next step should be!!

Worries and tension wont get you anywhere. What is the worst thing that could happen? You get a bad score. :)

Reviewing Manhattan SC is ok but only if you have the time. Don try to do too much in this last month. I recommend redoing OG carefully learning concepts in each and every SC problem.

@aanchalsinha

In one of my previous posts I tried to get more infos regarding the difficulty rate of Mgmat vs TestPrep. As my Q scores in test prep are quite similar to yours..( https://goo.gl/S2N9c ), my Q's in Mgmat are sensibly lower.. did you find the Mgmat more difficult too?
Verbalwise my scores are landing around 32/33 both in Mgmat and Test Prep... surprisingly I did not do any standard exercise for this... I read and read and read again standard English material: https://www.beatthegmat.com/mba/2011/05/ ... uture-mbas and try to pay attention to how sentences are constructed... it worked!

Good luck!

Hey Kenji,

I did find the MGMAT Quant section tougher although I don't think the same applies for Verbal. The thing I really liked about MGMAT it points you in the right direction as in gives you the breakdown of your score and the areas you need to improve.

Thanks for your advice regarding the material. Do you know if there is a list of OG questions broken down by various topics (for Quant)? Also, how did you work on CR?

cheers

Not sure if they are proper og questions.. but the question banks are broken down by topic...
As I told you I didn't use any specific material for CR... two years ago I did some Kaplan guide exercises just to know how it works.
Now I'm just getting some during CAT simulations..
