Speed and Distance

by surajgarg » Mon Jul 19, 2010 10:29 am
Stephanie, Regine and Brian ran a 20 mile race. Stephanie and Regine's combined times exceeded Brian's time by exactly 2 hours. If nobody ran faster than 8 miles per hour, who could have won the race?

I. Stephanie II. Regine III. Brian

A. I only
B. II only
C. III only
D. I or II only
E. I, II or III

OA - D

Pls explain the solution to this.

At least in this case, some trial-error could lead to a quick solution. 20 is a number with few factors. Add to it the constraint that speed can't exceed 8 mph for anybody. So, we're left with 2, 2.5, 4, 5 and 8. I tried for about two minutes before stumbling on to this combination: Brian - 2 mph; Stephanie - 2.5 mph; Reggie - 5 mph; The other combination could have values for S and R reversed. In either case the given condition of S's and R's combined time exceeding Brian's time by 2 hrs is satisfied. Only Stephanie or Regine could win. .
Hence (D)
.

well at first i was puzzled ....how one among S or R can win and another cannot as both have same features

but actual thing was
Stephenie and Brain could win only...
but it is not in choice S and R can win is the best available option
