I think it is important to see why D is wrong.

in most sc problems we face at least 2 answer choices which are grammatical but one of them has meaning problem.

the meaning problem can be
- the meaning is not logic
- the meaning is further from the meaning of the original sentence and so is wrong
- the meaning is in wordier expression
- the meaning is distorted. in this case we find hard to see the illogicness in one of the meanings.

choice D ilustrates the case 4th. The meaning in D is distorted meaning. it is hard to find the illogicness in D but it is clear that meaning in D is different from meaning in E. the clause after semicolon has no relation with the first clause and the meaning is considered illogic and wrong.

the game of sc is the game of choosing one of 2 meanings which are both grammatical . However, one of the meanings is distorted. we can hardly say that meaning in D is not logic but if D and E stand together, we can see D is distorted meaning.

I classify D into the last case in 4 above cases. the last cases is hardest case because we have to admit that D is still logic but because E exist, we can consider D a distorted meaning.

Ron use to say "using common sense, to realize the intended meaning". I think his saying works in this question.
