OG -verbal review qn

by kishokbabu » Thu Jan 05, 2012 5:13 am
As business grows more complex, students majoring in specialized areas like those of finance and
marketing have been becoming increasingly
successful in the job market.

(A) majoring in specialized areas like those of finance and marketing have been becoming increasingly
(B) who major in such specialized areas as finance and marketing are becoming more and more
(C) who majored in specialized areas such as those of finance and marketing are being increasingly
(D) who major in specialized areas like those of finance and marketing have been becoming more and
more
(E) having majored in such specialized areas as finance and marketing are being increasingly

Can anyone explain why the answer choice C is wrong. As per OG, the correct answer is B. But I am unable to understand why B is correct and whether there is any easy approach to solve this qn. Pls help

A - like those of is wrong
C - who majored in specialized areas such as those of finance and marketing are being increasingly - majored is wrong tense here, we are talking about generalization similar to sun rises, you cannot say sun rose as if its not going to happen tomorrow. i hope i am at this one. such as those of is redundant, are being is wrong.
D - same as A, like is wrong, we should use such as to indicate examples.
E - having majored - wrong.

IMO B.
Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.

Hi,
The reasons why choice C is incorrect are:
a. The "who" clause should be written in simple present tense because students still do specialization in the said subjects.
b. "those of" is unnecessary. Finance and marketing are the examples of specialized areas.

Choice B is the correct answer because it rectifies all the mistakes in the sentence.

So let us first locate the errors in the sentence: As business grows more complex, students majoring in specialized areas like those of finance and marketing have been becoming increasingly successful in the job market.

a. Use of "like" to cite examples is incorrect. "Such as" must be used to present examples. Idiom Error. "like those of" seems to present a comparison.

b. The growing complexity in business is an action that happens in present time frame. The use of "as" indicates simultaneous actions - as event 1 happens, event 2 happens. Thus, if event 1 is in present time frame, event 2 should also be in present time frame. Hence, use of "have been becoming" is incorrect since it denotes an action that started sometime in the past. Thus it should be changed to "are becoming" because the students with specialization are getting successful in the present day business. Verb Tense Error.

In choice B, use of "such as" rectifies the idiom error in the sentence. Also, "who" clause has been written in simple present tense that takes care of the Verb Tense error. Phrase "more and more" conveys the same meaning as "increasingly" does. Hence Choice B is the correct answer.

Errors in Choice D
: a. Same idiom and verb tense errors as in A.
b. Same "those of" error as in C.

Errors in choice E
: Same verb tense error as in C. "having majored" denotes an action that has been done already.

The concepts tested in this sentence have been covered in e-gmat concepts: a. Verb Tense I - Preview Concepts (Free Trial)
b. Verb Tenses II - Level 1
c. Idioms - Standard Expression - Level 2

1. Use correct verb tense to denote the correct time line of the events.
2. Use "such as" to present examples, not "like".
