I am writing exactly as I solved it in mind..

1/4 = 0.25 so 1/8 = 0.125 so 7/8 needs 0.125 more to become 1

1/9 = 0.11 which is less than 0.125

sum of both is very close to 1 but not greater than 1

so answer is B

one more way
7/8+1/9=71/72
take the answer options and convert the denominator to 72

A) 1/2 &3/4=36/72 & 54/72- No
B)3/4 and1=54/72 and 72/72- yes
C) 1 and 5/4-obviously no
D)no
E)No

No need to really calculate it, just look at the answer options

It is smaller than 1, beacuse for it to be bigger than 1 it needed at least 1/8. So it is just a lil bigger than 1 so B...


GMAT doesn't test your math ability, it tests your problemsolving ability. You don't need a calculation for everything... (My opinion, I'm sure many disagree)
