OG 11th Edition - Q129

by hich78 » Tue Jun 16, 2009 12:42 pm
This is Q129 in OG 11th edition:
On a recent trip, Cindy drove her car 290 miles, rounded to the nearest 10 miles, and used 12 gallons of gasoline, rounded to the nearest gallon. The actual number of miles per gallon that Cindy's car got on this trip must have been netween

A) 290/12.5 and 290/11.4
B) 295/12 and 284/11.4
C) 284/12 and 295/12
D) 284/12.5 and 295/11.4
E) 295/12.5 and 284/11.4

This is an easy question but I dont understand why the miles can range between 284 and 295. SInce they are rounded to the nearest 10 miles, they should range between 285 and 294,no?
Same for the gallons, explanation says that they range between 11.4 and 12.5, but for me, they shld range between 11.5 and 12.4

What do you think?

i agree...the rounding is not correct here...at least i think so...you cannot round 11.4 to 12.

Ignore this question. The answer is incorrect. The answer that you came up with is correct. This is the only question in the OG 11 that's flawed. Source: GMAT instructor, Brent from www.leapeducation.ca. This problem has been reported to GMAC and they are aware of it.
